Some friends and I met up to try the ribs at Mills and Grills in Florey. The store is mainly a take away joint but does have two small tables inside. The two types of ribs available are either pork or lamb and smothered in a smokey BBQ sauce and char-grilled. As we were in the mood for ribs, we ordered full racks of both ($34.90 for a full rack of pork, and $26.90 for a full rack of lamb). The ribs came with a choice of chips, salad or both, so we ordered chips and salad with each of the ribs.

Mills and Grills also has an extensive pizza menu so we thought we’d better order a pizza to break up the ribs. Since we had pork and lamb ribs, we decided to go for a chicken pizza (we’re quite the carnivores) and I picked the peri peri chicken. The four sizes are small, large, family-sized and the largest being New York style. We chose the family sized pizza ($21.90) and figured leftovers can be eaten the following day. Everything was ordered online through the Mills and Grills website which was quick and easy. The website indicated delivery time was about 45 minutes, but the pick up time was only 15 minutes, so we left as soon as we ordered. Our order was ready when we walked in the door and we soon walked out with three big boxes. Our food was still warm when we got back to the house.

It may have been because the ribs came sliced in individual ribs, but it did not look like we received a full rack of either. We started off with the lamb ribs but sadly it was more fat and gristle than meat. The smokey BBQ sauce was sticky and sweet but I couldn’t tell that it was smokey. The pork ribs were massive and each single rib had a lot of meat on it. The meat was tender and easily came off the bone. We actually received two small tubs of extra sauce too which was a nice touch. We definitely preferred the pork ribs over the lamb ribs, but again couldn’t tell that it was a smokey BBQ sauce. Neither of us cracked open the small container of garden salad on the side.

The chips were my favourite part of the meal. They had been thickly cut and lightly tossed in a delicious BBQ seasoning mix which tasted fantastic. The chips were also still a little crunchy and soft on the inside (I was worried they would go soggy in the car ride but they didn’t). In my opinion, the pizza was disappointing. There was a generous amount of topping but I didn’t like the base which seemed too bready and just didn’t do it for me. It seemed like a more expensive version of Dominoes (though I am more partial to Italian style pizzas).

To sum it up, Mills and Grills offers a good online ordering system and we liked that the indicative timing for deliveries and pick ups. The pizza wasn’t anything special. The pork ribs were fat and juicy but there were only 6 ribs provided as the full rack. The sauce was sweet and not the ‘smokey BBQ’ flavour we were expecting as advertised. The chips were the best part of the meal.
