Note: I was invited to try Super Bao in Woden, however all opinions are my own.
My last blog post on Super Bao was nearly 3 years ago when they opened their Dickson restaurant. Since then, Super Bao have expanded into Verity Lane in the city, and now with a shipping container in Woden.
The menu has baos, baogers (burgers using bao buns), some sides like popcorn chicken, and drinks.
We tried the bao trio (usually $19) with our pick of tempura prawn, pulled chilli beef, and roast crackling pork. The baos are still as soft and fluffy as I remember. The pulled beef is our favourite but doesn’t have much heat to it. The roast pork has an absolute beautiful crackling on top. Although this was a freebie for us, it’s got a steep price tag and I don’t think I’d pay $19 for three little baos which wouldn’t actually fill me up.
We also had the vegetarian spring rolls which surprisingly had a generous portion of filling inside, and awesome crunch.
There are 4 baogers to choose from – Wagyu beef cheese, southern fried chicken, kungpo chicken, and eggplant. I choose the first two to try. I’m impressed that the fluffy bao carries over to the baogers too. I’m going to write this up front – we were both blown away! On the first bite, we knew they were great baogers. The wagyu beef and cheese has double beef patties and double cheese!! It is SO juicy and exactly what I want in a beef burger. Good quality well-seasoned beef, lots of cheese, tomato, lettuce, and onion rings. There are also two types of sauces in the baoger- a tonkatsu sauce and a ‘burger’ sauce. I’m not sure what is in either, but it must give the baoger that extra bit of yum. I loved everything about it and highly recommend this baoger if you love beef burgers. It completely hit the spot for me. Super satisfied!
Mr FoodPornJournal on the other hand preferred the kungpo chicken baoger. This is equally good and juicy with generous chunk of fried chicken you can really sink your teeth in to. It includes lettuce, tomato, onion rings, pickles, and a house made kungpo sauce, aioli and crushed cashews.
Both baogers are larger than expected and we would order both baogers again. It all comes in cardboard boxes ready to take away. I believe there are one or two small tables with chairs provided by Super Bao, but there isn’t really anywhere else to sit down and eat.
Thanks to Super Bao for the invite.
