Myanmar Corner at the Casey shops is a little gem of a restaurant. I’ve dined here only about 3 times as it’s located quite far from me – I wish it was closer!
Let’s start with an entree. I love anything duck. So when I see shredded duck and onion puffs ($9 for three pieces) on the menu, I do not hesitate to order a serve. These are like curry puffs wrapped in a crispy golden puff pastry. I can taste actual chunks of duck stewed in something delicious, and the puff pastry is equally good. If you like duck, you should try this. Absolutely mouth watering.
The main menu has dishes like pickled tea leaf salad, curries, and native noodle dishes.
The Mohinga ($20) is the Myanmar National noodle dish in a fish soup. It comes with rice noodles, fish cakes, egg, topped with a crispy fried pea chip and coriander. I just love this! The noodle broth has so much flavour and body, but isn’t too rich or fishy.
Ong no kaut swal ($20) is like a Burmese laksa, with coconut noodle soup with chicken, fish cakes, and egg topped with a crispy fried pea chip, coriander and a lime dressing. I find that it’s much lighter than a regular laksa and not overly creamy. Good portion size for one person – not too much and not too little.
My friend tried the Kaw yay khauk swal ($22) – thick egg noodles with duck, fried dough, chinese broccoli and bean sprouts. It is in a much smaller bowl so I’m not sure how filling it may be as a main dish.
The cassava cake ($7) is a delicious little treat if you want a bit of sweetness to end the meal. Cassava cake is made out of grated cassava, coconut milk and condensed milk with a layer of custard on top.
I also tried the falooda ($7) – a dessert drink with ice cream, milk, rose syrup, jelly and tapioca. With my sweet tooth, it’s something I should like. But it didn’t really do it for me. It could be because I’ve never been a thick shake or melted ice cream kind of person. But my other friends seem to enjoy this.
Prices are decent, the food has such vibrant colours and flavours, and service is quick. Highly recommend if you’re in the area, or want to try something unique.
