Kodiak

Note: I was invited to dine at Kodiak, however all opinions are my own.

A couple of months ago, we dined in at Kodiak in Kingston to try out the menu. We opt to sit outside as we have an active toddler with us. For drinks, I order a mocktail and leave it up to the bar to decide on the mix. A lychee and apple concoction arrives for me while Mr FoodPornJournal orders the Drop Bear gin cocktail with ooray gin, chinola and lime.

From the raw menu, I order the kingfish which comes with lime, avocado and chives. There are two sizes available and we receive the larger size (usually $22). The presentation is lovely and some salted crackers are provided on the side. The kingfish itself is very fresh and perfectly seasoned. It is really is such a delicious starter.

I also choose the king prawns which are usually $9 each – a hefty price tag per prawn. These are cooked in Nduja butter and sprinkled with chives. They are finger licking good with a bit of a kick from the nduja and pulls out of the shell easily.

When we order the wagyu cheeseburger, our waitress asks us how we want the patty cooked – a rare question at a restaurant about a burger. We ask for medium to medium rare or whatever the chef recommends. Medium is recommended so we go with that. The burger consists of American cheddar, tomato, pickles, and bacon jam. It is quite unique as there is this wonderful smokiness to the burger which I haven’t tasted in other burger joints. It’s also juicy with a soft glossy bun, not overloaded with ingredients but still a substantial amount.

I also try one of the flatbreads and choose the prosciutto with nduja, tomato, burrata and basil (usually $30). This is essentially a pizza on flatbread. We left the flatbread for too long so by the time we got to it, it was very goopy and soft – so best to eat it as soon as it arrives!

Mr FoodPornJournal also tries the Ryan Reynolds cocktail of gin, violet, luxardo, lemon and egg whites. There are some interesting cocktails on the menu in addition to all the classics.

No kids menu available, but I’ve seen babies and prams in the venue and we managed to entertain our toddler for long enough. Kodiak can offer vegan and gluten-free on request.
