I love tiramisu. So here’s a list of thoughts on Canberra’s tiramisu scene. I know there’s heaps more places to try, I’ll get to them eventually.
Disclaimer: The standards of tiramisu may be different depending on the day and depending on who makes them. My opinions may change if I were to go back and try a second time!
Pizza Arte
At Pizza Arte in Kingston, you’ll find freshly made tiramisu in take away boxes in the fridge. Tiramisu are cut into cake slices which will set you back $8. Bargain!
The good: Very light and fluffy, not heavy on the mascarpone cream, not too much coffee, not dry, good price point for a slice.
The not so good: I couldn’t really taste much coffee at all so some sponge bits tasted bland, sponge to cream ratio is slightly off – too little cream.
L’Americano Bar
The good: Big slab of a portion size, very light on the sugar
The not so good: Very subtle amount of coffee combined with very little sugar kind of made this too bland for my taste.
QT Canberra – Capitol bar & grill
The good: Can hardly taste any liqueur (a win for me), great flavour
The not so good: Too much cream to sponge ratio
Locale
The good: Good portion, tasty, plenty of cocoa powder and shaved chocolate on top
The not so good: Nothing of significance!
Eightysix South
The Good: Very smooth, not too strong on coffee
The not so good: One of the more expensive tiramisu’s that I’ve come across at $18, there’s a lot of cream to sponge ratio.
Belluci’s
The Good: The balanced flavours are spot on, there’s not too much liqueur, generous dusting of chocolate powder and chocolate twill on top
The not so good: Expensive ($16) for a small portion, a little goopy, very thin bits of sponge made it seem flat.
Molto Italian
The good: Great balance of cream and sponge, hardly any liqueur (this is a positive for me).
The not so good: Higher end of the $ scale at $18.
La Cantina
The Good: One of the best tiramisu’s I’ve had in Canberra. I don’t think there’s any liqueur in it (which I prefer), there’s dark chocolate ganache, the lady fingers are soft and soaked in a perfect amount of coffee, and I love the creamy and decadent mascarpone. A fantastic combination of yumminess.
The not so good: Served in a glass so you can’t really lick it clean without looking weird.
Italian & Sons
The good: Perfection! Beautiful velvety smooth mascarpone, great cream to sponge ratio, and so delicious.
The not so good: Can’t think of anything.
The Italian Place
The good: $16 for a decent portion, topped with zabaglione coffee shards
The not so good: Bottom layer of sponge is very wet and watery, a lot of coffee and liqueur that seemed to overpower.
Colosseum Italian Street Food
The good: Light mascarpone cream, easy to transport in a take away container
The not so good: Heavier on the coffee, and the sponge is a little dry in some spots
Pizza Artigiana
The good: Everything and a reasonable $12
The not so good: Nothing
Agostini’s
The good: Good slab with dark chocolate crunch on top
The not so good: A bit too much coffee for me
Rosemary by Eighty Twenty
The good: Great structural integrity, not too wet, perfect balance!
The not so good: Only really minor because I’m not a big coffee drinker, it might be stronger on the coffee than I’d like but I still really enjoyed this.
Briscola
The good: I love a perfect rectangular slab.
The not so good: Very wet, a bit strong on coffee, not that creamy.
Black Salt Dining
The good: Very light and creamy
The not so good: Small portion, very creamy, coffee almost non-existent.
