It’s nearly mid-autumn (Northern hemisphere time) / moon cake festival time. (For info, here’s a previous post about what a moon cake is and a little bit more about the festival).
Are you searching to buy some moon cakes too?
Every year, I always get in too late and there’s nothing left. Unlike my parents, I’m not a traditionalist so I don’t really like the egg yolk moon cakes. (Flashback to when I was a child and dumped the elusive egg yolk into the trash, and being scolded for what seemed like forever by mum. The egg yolk part is expensive!). Since then, I’ve always eaten around the egg yolks and prefer the various bean or lotus seed paste moon cakes.
Anyway, here’s a round up of places to buy moon cakes around Canberra and online. Definitely start looking in late July/early August though!
In-store
Supersweet Patisserie
Now located in Braddon, Supersweet have released preorders for special salted egg lava moon cake gift boxes. I believe order cut-off is today (29 August)!
Little Wu streetfood
Selling savoury pork mince and cheese moon cakes for a limited time only.
Tea Connoisseur
Get your moon cake fix and other desserts at Tea Connoisseur’s Mid-Autumn Festival Afternoon Tea on 10 September. Bookings essential.

Weston Asian Grocer
The Casahana bunny moon cakes look super cute, but alas sold out the day before I got there.
Asian Provisions
A recent Facebook post shows a range of the more traditional moon cakes and they usually have more contemporary flavours from the Casahana brand.
Other Asian grocery shops
I purchased some snow skin moon cakes from an Asian grocer in Dickson (these are not baked). The two-packs come in various flavours – I picked mango chestnut. The ‘snow skin’ is soft, chewy with a mochi-like texture as it uses glutinous rice flour. You can find them in the refrigerated section.
Costco
Lava moon cakes were spotted at Costco. And now that I think about it, I do remember seeing moon cakes in previous years too.
Hobby Kitchen
Cooking all sorts of Malaysian food, this home cook also advertised moon cakes recently on their Facebook page. I’ve not tried Hobby Kitchen personally, but have heard good things.
Corner Bakery
This new one home bakery has popped up in Narrabundah and some friends have also tried the moon cakes here.
Canberra Moon Festival
In 2022, the Canberra Moon Festival is being held on 9-11 September and there will be a bakery stall making and selling moon cakes, as well as some moon cake making sessions. Get your last minute fix!
Online – you might get a chance next year to hit up these two chocolate shops as they’ve already sold out!
If you want to try more contemporary flavoured moon cakes:
Godiva
This year, I jumped when Godiva released its preorders (which sold out quickly last year). The cheapest was a 4-pack for $62.90 so I snapped that up. It comes in lychee oolong tea white chocolate, mango kumquat white chocolate, ginger mango dark chocolate, and passionfruit hazelnut milk chocolate flavours. Can’t wait to open it!
Koko Black
I don’t remember seeing moon cakes last year so this must be a recent introduction. But Koko Black were selling moon cakes! There were flavours like matcha red bean, cherry pistachio, coconut pandan and crispy almond caramel. It sold out in less than a week. Pricing for the Lucky 8 gift box was $88 for two of each flavour. You could also buy individually at $8.80 each.
