Gill’s Patisserie is tucked away in Fyshwick, distributing its goodies made on site to other cafes around Canberra. But you can also sit down in their cafe if you want a bite to eat. On my first visit during lockdown, I wanted to try the kimchi twisters that I’ve seen advertised on Gill’s social media. But alas, these need to be preordered.
Instead, I tried the chocolate mint, and raspberry coconut financiers ($5 each), Portuguese tart ($4), and creme brulee tart. I’m blown away by how good the financiers are! Moist and buttery, they melt in my mouth. I just can’t stop at one bite and soon the financier is nearly gone, and I have to exercise some discipline to allow Mr FoodPornJournal at least one bite. The Portuguese tart is pretty standard. The creme brulee tart doesn’t have the crack on top, but is oh so creamy and still hits the spot.
Gill contacts me and kindly gifts me a Korean sang cream cake, commonly ordered as a birthday cake (my mum used to order something similar growing up!). It’s a sponge cake with layers of fresh whipped cream and fresh fruit.
When I open the box it comes in, the cake looks so smooth and delicate, with simple piped cream on top. I find that the cake itself is extremely light and not too sweet, with the chunks of strawberry, kiwi and grape in the middle layer giving it freshness. Because it’s so light, the sang cream cake is very moreish and I can’t help cutting a second slice for myself before I finish the first!
Prices start at $45 for an 8-inch cake. Gill can also drop it off at the Bestore in Mitchell as a click and collect option if you’re north-side.
I also remembered to preorder two kimchi twisters when I picked up the cake. With a Korean background, Gill would like to introduce some Korean goodies to the Canberra scene. The kimchi twisters are savoury, but lightly covered in sugar. My first bite gives me a very subtle hit of chilli, and on another bite there’s a small chunk of cabbage. The texture is just right, soft but still dense enough so that it’s a little bit bouncy and chewy. It’s a kimchi doughnut without being overpoweringly kimchi. The sugar gives it a good balance. You can also find a few loaves of Gill’s kimchi stirato in store.
There are also hot meat pies, sandwiches, kronuts and a few more tarts and cakes. I’ll definitely be going back for those financiers. Open Monday-Friday only.
