I wrote about Canberra’s Top 10 Dessert Destinations back in 2015 (wow time flies) and I thought it was about time for an update. There are so many new places, so here’s another 16 desserts to try! In no particular order…

The Bite pretzels

I first came across The Bite on Instagram where you could get some of their pretzels delivered. The Bite soon set up a stall at the Haigh Park Village Markets in Braddon and are now trading there every Sunday. Apart from the original pretzel, there are flavours such as Biscoff, oreo, birthday cake, almond and chocolate. Biscoff is my favourite so far! Pretzels are $5-6 each.

Husk Bakery’s croissants

If you follow Husk Bakery’s Facebook page, you’ll know that they sell at the Farmers market, Haigh Park Village Markets, and deliver goods from its van to the streets of Gungahlin, Tuggeranong and Googong. Both pistachio, and raspberry jam and cream croissants are absolutely delicious! They are so colourful and there are more flavours. I’m going back for the chocolate raspberry croissant next.

Superemoji Meow Box

I recently tried the rose ‘meow box’ ($11.80) from the Civic Superemoji store. Set in a small tin that fits in your hand, are layers of rose flavoured chiffon cake, cream and jelly, topped with pistachios, grapes, strawberries, lychees and dried rose petals. I really love the light flavours and some crunch from the topping. Being a big fan of Black Star Pastry’s strawberry watermelon cake, this is a good and slightly tweaked alternative. Very easy to eat. There are other flavours such as durian/mango, matcha and taro.

Supersweet Pastry strawberry watermelon cake

At the Isaacs shops, Supersweet Pastry cafe sells croissants, danishes and various millecrepe cakes. The rose millecrepe is nice and light, and I like that it doesn’t have too much cream in it. It’s the watermelon strawberry cake however that would bring me back. Slices are very small and I can’t remember the prices. Yes it’s a Black Star Pastry copy, but the taste is there and it’s now in Canberra!

Green Tea En’s matcha sundae

Matcha soft serve is available at Green Tea En at the Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets. You can even add gold leaf to it (extra $5) or silver leaf (extra $4) for a bit of ooh-aah. The matcha sundae includes a stick of dango, pocky, red bean, and rice bubble like crunch at the bottom. A little bit of Japan in Fyshwick! Green Tea En also serve matcha frappe, matcha lattes, and black sesame soft serve!

AM Cakes

AM Cakes in Harrison have millecrepe cakes in many flavours, strawberry chiffon cakes, basque cheesecake and the strawberry watermelon cake (another copy of Black Star Pastry’s). I’ve tried the matcha red bean, and earl grey millecrepe cakes ($10.80 per slice of crepe cake but you do get approx 25 crepe layers) – very creamy, more so than Supersweet Pastry. I do love the matcha and sweet red bean pairing. I’d love to try the strawberry watermelon cake and chiffon cakes next time. There is minimal seating inside so I prefer to get it to go.

Three Mills Bakery twice baked croissants

The twice baked croissants from Three Mills Bakery are what a croissant should be. Flaky and crunchy at first bite. These large croissants are a special treat with a delicious filling and decorated on top. There are new flavours each week. Both the pistachio strawberry, and mocha croissants were wonderful!

The Whale Tea’s souffle

It took a while (about 20 minutes) to make the souffle from scratch, so not one of your quick grab and go treats. But if you’ve got the time, the souffle is deliciously wobbly, super soft and fluffy (like what a cloud would taste like) and comes in different flavours. Grab a bubble tea while you’re there.

Willow’s Biscuit House

I first came across Willow’s Biscuit House at the Old Bus Depot Markets and the Handmade Markets. They’ve since set up a website and online store that sells out within about half an hour every time they restock. If you can get in quick enough, try the various melting moments. I love the vanilla caramel, passionfruit and chocolate melting moments, as well as the monte carlo. Note: They are currently on a break (website and social media are down), but hopefully will be up and running again soon.

Misu Castle

I am still yet to try anything from Misu Castle, though by the sounds of it, it is extremely popular with a queue out the door before they even open. There used to be odd opening times (originally opening at 3pm on certain days) so I could never quite get there. Millecrepe cakes in flavours like mango, durian, matcha and more, plus other Asian desserts and drinks. Their Instagram page advertises the latest flavours and treats which change regularly. At this stage, they are located within the Real Tea shop at No Name Lane in New Acton.

Lolo and Lola

There is always a full dessert cabinet filled with Filipino treats such as chiffon cake, sans rival, pandesal, yema cake, leche flan, chocolate crinkles, ube cheesecake and ensaymada. It changes daily! I love the ube cheesecake and chiffon cake, and the different flavours of sans rival particularly coffee and chocolate. Check out their Instagram or Facebook page for updates.

Lolo and Lola ube cake

I’ve also ordered whole cakes from Lolo and Lola – both the mango sans rival and red velvet cake. The ube white chocolate cake is amazing too!

As You Like It

The decadent muffins from As You Like It near the ANU are a must try. The flavours change daily and these will definitely fill you up.

Hungry Brown Cow

I remember the Hungry Brown Cow stall at the Old Bus Depot Markets. It has come a long way since then and the owner has now set up his own burger and brownie bar at the Holt shops. I haven’t visited yet but the brownie cookies are devilishly indulgent and come in various flavours that change each week. The deep fried brownie cookies at The Forage were also a big hit (not sure if they’re still making these).

Superbao’s icecream bao-ger

Fried bao sandwiching a scoop of ice cream. It’s not too big so that you’re overly full and a nice treat to end the night.

Spilt Milk

Originally from Orange NSW, Spilt Milk set up its second store in Dickson. My favourite flavours so far are the strawberries and cream, biscoff, hazelnut and pistachio. Everything is made with real natural fresh ingredients.

Le Bon Melange

The long cake cabinet at Le Bon Melange in Gungahlin is seriously impressive. Donuts, bear claws, scrolls, tarts, cakes, macarons, danishes, croissants and more. Browse through the cabinet to decide what you want before joining the queue.
