Eating in Italy (Padua) – Part 7 – Trattoria da Nane della Giulia

Following on from the balsamic vinegar tour in Modena, my aunt took us to Trattoria da Nane della Giulia for dinner. She tells us the building the trattoria is in used to be a World War 2 hospital and there’s lots of history here.

Of course the staff recognise her and they chat and catch up briefly. Red wine is ordered and a basket of bread arrives at the table.

The menu is handwritten and I trust my aunt to order for us.

Sardines are big in the Veneto region. These sarde in saor (8โ‚ฌ) are traditionally cooked with red onions, but white onions are used here instead. Mr FPJ and I both try one but it’s not for us. The sardines are marinated in vinegar and white wine so there’s a sourness to them but also sweetness from the onions.

The gnocchi in foal stew (10โ‚ฌ) is home cooking at its best. Super tender fall-apart foal meat with vegetables, over freshly made gnocchi. So good.

Bigoli with pumpkin and guinea fowl (10โ‚ฌ) is equally delicious in a well seasoned ragout.

The chicken marinated in red wine and stewed vegetables is a hearty dish and would be great in winter. The sauce was rich and thick, and full of flavour after all the red wine is cooked out.

We were surprised to see Venetian liver Fegato alla veneziana on the table. My aunt loves it but Mr FPJ and I are not that into offal so she had most of this herself.

Old-school handwritten menus, lovely home style cooking, friendly service, lots of locals and all set in a historical building.
