Note: We were invited to try the new loaded hotdogs at The Bavarian in Woden, however all opinions are my own

The Bavarian recently launched a range of three loaded hotdogs on its menu, and we got to go in to try them out. All loaded dogs are $18, come in a brioche bun and includes a side of fries.

The first is the Chilli dog with a kielbasa sausage, chilli con carne, queso, tomato and onion salsa and jalapenos. There’s plenty of mince in the chilli con carne and it’s mildly spicy (I could have endured a lot more heat if I’m being honest). The tomato and onion salsa provides a fresh balance to the otherwise very meaty mouthful. This is my favourite of the three we got to try.

The mac & cheese dog is filled with a cheese kransky, mac and cheese, topped with fried onions and bbq sauce. After having the chilli dog, my taste-buds took a while to adjust to this more mild version. I feel that the cheese kransky is a lot less flavoursome when compared to the kielbasa. There’s a good amount of creamy mac and cheese on top, and the onion rings are crunchy. It’s definitely less salty than the chilli dog and is Mr FPJ’s favourite of the three dogs we tried.

The spicy K dog has a kielbasa sausage, kimchi slaw, sesame seeds and spring onions. It’s the less ‘loaded’ of the three dogs with some kimchi slaw within the bun and on top. Again, after having the chilli dog, this seemed like a less flavourful option. However, as my tastebuds settled down, I found a good textural balance biting into the crunchy slaw against the soft brioche and sausage. I was expecting actual kimchi but it was more of a mildly spiced up version of coleslaw. A simpler version of a loaded dog.

The Mega Loaded Dog (usually $26) is a mega version of all three choices in the one long bun. It’s impressive to look at – gigantic! I think this is better value if you really want to try all three types, however it doesn’t come with fries or any other sides. Best to share this one!

There are also several beers to choose from – you can ask the staff for a recommendation based on your tastes or to match to the dish.
