Every now and then, Din Tai Fung (DTF) make turn their amazing xiao long baos (soup dumplings) into one giant dumpling! We recently went up to Sydney and made a beeline for DTF at World Square. As part of Sydney’s Vivid Festival, DTF produced rainbow-coloured giant dumplings for a few weeks. We ordered one giant dumpling each ($8.95) which came with a straw and a little card sitting on the side of the bamboo basket cautioning us that it was hot.

I carefully inserted the straw in the middle of the dumpling, praying it wouldn’t burst like it did when I tried it a few years ago. The mince inside was made up of pork and large chunks of seafood. I was impressed as I could see massive pieces of fish and prawn mixed in together. There was plenty of soup which was a fragrant seafood broth, and yes it was super hot.

The dumpling skin was thicker than the regular XLBs to hold all the soup inside, so it was a little awkward to eat – sucking out the soup, while nibbling the mince, and waiting for all the soup to be slurped before eating most of the dumpling skin so that the soup didn’t spill. But quite fun and gimmicky.

We of course ordered the regular XLBs which are my absolute favourites and always consistent no matter what part of the world you’re in.
