I’ve been to Lazy Su, a modern Asian eating house in Braddon, a few times now so I’m just going amalgamate it all here. The menu is split into small and large plates, raw dishes, salads, soups, rice dishes, and desserts.

Lazy Su inside

The first time I dined at Lazy Su, my friend and I ordered the popular wagyu cheesesteak spring rolls ($6 each). That’s right, spring rolls stuffed with soft beef and cheese. It was served hot, straight out of the fryer, with equal portions of beef and gooey hot cheese. Delicious! It was difficult to stop at just one each but we thought we had better try more items on the menu.

We also ordered pork belly skewers (no longer available) which were nice but they were your average bbq’d pork skewers.

We shared the pork platter which came with pickled vegetables, lettuce cups, and a mildly spicy sauce. This was a DIY sang choi bao but we thought the lettuce cups were far too small to place anything in them so we just had it deconstructed style. The flavour of the pork was fabulous similar to char siu with a bit charring on the edges. But the meat was a little fatty with gristly bits so I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I would.

At the time, there were only two desserts available so we ordered both to share. First was the matcha bao ice cream sandwich ($9). I loved that the bao had been deep fried which it made it nice and crunchy against the melting green tea ice cream. You can also get this with black butterscotch ice cream.

There was also the Japanese cheesecake with a pandan popsicle and whipped cream on the side (no longer available). The cheesecake was soft and very light. I hope a version of it comes back on the menu. The popsicle was difficult to share between the two of us but we made it work.

In the end, we thought we should have just ordered the $49 feed me banquet as it seemed like better value. On another occasion, I dined in solo for a weekday lunch. I ordered one of the salaryman lunch bowls – the beef brisket bibimbap ($17). Other items on the salaryman lunch menu includes a fried chicken ramen and a soba noodle salad.

I’ve also tried the 12 hour Bossam noodle soup with pork belly (no longer on the menu). This was served in a huge bowl but there wasn’t much noodles in it or much of anything else but the broth which was very oily. It had some good flavours but not enough to fill me up. I had to go buy a sushi roll afterwards to feel a bit full. It could have just been me, I don’t tend to drink all my soup and rely on the noodles and fillings to fill me up.

On another occasion, I went back to Lazy Su for dinner with another friend. I ordered a mocktail which I wasn’t impressed with as it was far too sour and it didn’t seem like the bartender had any idea what it would taste like. I should have said something but I just left it. We ordered the tempura tofu fries ($12) with vegan wasabi mayo to share which were surprisingly crunchy and very filling as they were long and fat, and there was so many of them.

The kimchi dumplings ($8) were also filled with tofu, noodles and shallot. They were round and delicious but not spicy like I had expected of kimchi.

We also shared the salmon poke salad ($18) which we both enjoyed – it was very fresh with crunchy cabbage, edamame, cucumber, shiitake, rice, nori and pickles. Delicious though probably not that filling on its own as it was a small portion.

In all my experiences, the food was very quick to arrive and staff were happy to explain the dishes and assist in choosing something to eat. It gets very loud inside, especially during the dinner service. A suggestion is to book a table on the outdoor deck at the front and people-watch on Lonsdale Street. Prices are not cheap leaning towards the more upmarket fusion food with small to medium portion sizes. I’d recommend grabbing some friends and trying the Feed Me banquet to try out the best dishes.

(Note: Lazy Su’s sister restaurant Baby Su has also recently opened in Civic)
