I’m on the hunt for the best baked eggs in Canberra. My Top 8 are listed below.

Double Shot

The Moroccan baked eggs are a staple winter dish at Double Shot. I’ve had the pleasure of trying a few iterations over the years as this is my go-to place for baked eggs. The Sicilian tomato sugo is usually mixed with some vegetables – I’ve previously tried it with zucchini and pearl cous cous. The current menu is offering baked eggs with white beans, artichoke, eggplant and mozzarella with a choice of Italian sausage!

Gus’ Place

Gus’ does baked eggs with beef meatballs and plenty of tomato sugo. The dish is topped with a sufficient amount of thin slices of toasted bread to absorb that rich sugo. If you can’t find a seat inside, the heaters are turned on in the outdoor section but it’s still quite chilly so bring a coat.

Mocan and Green Grout

A staple on the winter menu at Mocan and Green Grout is the baked eggs with eggplant, harissa and chevre. I love the spice from the harissa and mixing it in the chevre to create a creamy texture to dip my bread in to. I feel like a third slice of bread is needed (but I love carbs).

1 or 2 Café

This Manuka cafe does a Spanish baked eggs, big portions, a good balance between the sour/tart and sweet with chopped vegetables in the mix and lots of chorizo.

The Museum Café at the National Museum of Australia

Enjoy baked eggs with a view at the Museum Cafe. While the tomato sugo was a little acidic, I liked the chorizo, olive tapenade and grilled sourdough. It gets extremely busy on weekends so I’d get there early or book a table.

EQ Cafe and Lounge

EQ in Deakin does baked eggs in a large pan with harissa spiced tomato and capsicum mix and a dollop of yoghurt on top. I loved and appreciated the two thick slices of buttered toast to go with it. This was the most generous serving of both baked eggs and bread that I’ve had so far. You can also be tempted by the range of baked goodies at the front counter.

Baked

Baked in Braddon does a reasonable sized baked eggs ($18) with house made tomato salsa, chorizo and parmesan. I love that the parmesan topping is like a crispy layer of cheese baked onto the baked eggs. Delicious! And plenty of toasted bread to go with it.

Toasted

Toasted in Braddon do a shakshouka baked eggs ($19) with goats cheese, a side of pickled fennel and herb salad, and two slices of white toast. The baked eggs come in a small tin bowl and is the smallest version I’ve tried. However it worked well with the fresh side salad (I loved that pickled fennel!) to break up the meal. The bread to baked eggs ratio was also spot on and the two slices of toast filled me up. I left feeling satisfied and not overly full.

Some mentions, noting I have not yet tried these dishes:

Stand By Me – famous for its regularly changing French Toast specials, I spotted a baked eggs dish on Stand By Me’s instagram…

The Meating Room’s Portuguese baked eggs with artichoke, olives and spinach also looks pretty good.

Not technically in Canberra, but thought I’d mention it anyway. If you’re on your way to or from Sydney, make a stop at Grandma’s Little Bakery in Collector. There are various baked egg dishes available on the menu all served with freshly baked white bread.
