I met up with some friends at new Gungahlin burger joint, Oscy’s Burgers, a few weekends ago. The menu consists of eight burgers including beef, chicken, lamb, salmon and veggie as well as the recent addition of buffalo wings. There are also extras you can add to your burger such as bacon, hash brown, avocado etc. There’s limited seating available so most people get it to go.

I ordered the Big Bird ($16) filled with Southern fried chicken, American style cheese, tomato, lettuce, and Oscy’s secret sauce. I enjoyed the soft bread with its glossy top, but I thought the piece of chicken was quite small for the price. Not exactly a big bird. It was juicy but not the best fried chicken I’ve had. We were kindly provided with free large chips due to the wait time (which wasn’t that long but it was very nice of them). The chips were the stand out item for everyone. Crinkle cut, golden, crunchy but soft in the middle and well-salted.

My friend ordered the Oscy Burger ($15) with flame grilled beef, American style cheese, lettuce, tomato and Oscy’s secret sauce. He thought the burger was a decent size with a juicy well-cooked patty.

The special that weekend was free chips and a drink with any hot dog purchase. Mr FPJ and another friend ordered the Big Dog ($12.50). This had Italian pork sausage, onion, shredded cheese and Oscy’s sauce. Unfortunately they were both disappointed by the size – it was rather small for a ‘big dog’, the filling wasn’t fantastic and it had been overloaded with sauce. I’m told the hot dog roll was nice and soft.

I was tempted to ordered the Nutella burger for dessert, but I filled up on chips instead. Service was what you’d expect from a burger joint – casual and friendly. Our soft drinks took a little while and reminding to come out. And as mentioned above, we appreciated the large chips for the delay. Comparatively, I don’t think the Big Bird had as much flavour as other similar burgers around Canberra nor was the filling enough to satisfy for the price charged. It wasn’t something I’d drive out to Gungahlin specifically but I’d be willing to try the other burgers some time in the future.
