I had heard about the famous Burmese Curry Place from friends that work in the city. The best and cheapest curry you will find in all of Canberra, I was told. As it’s only open Monday to Friday, it was never a place I could easily get to. Until now. I could smell the hit of home made curry as soon as I walked inside. The eatery is tiny with just a few tables inside and outside. The set up is simple with a table that holds the register (cash only), and a bain-marie holding all 9 curries.
The price is cheap as chips. $6.99 take away or $7.99 dine-in for a choice of 2 curries with rice. There are 9 curries to choose from – think of all the combinations you could make! The options are:
- Chicken and potato
- Egg curry
- Sweet pork
- Fish cake
- Fish curry
- Beef and potato
- Chicken and prawn
- Chicken and bean
- Vegetarian
The below is the #2 and #7. Soft chicken with a few small prawns and a bit of spice. And I love egg curry.
My favourite so far is the #4 fish cake and #5 fish curry combination. The fish is always so soft, full of flavour and slightly spicy. The fish cakes are massive and usually only two can fit into the take away container. These fat and juicy fish cakes are well seasoned and stuffed full of fish mince and coriander. The curries can be quite oily but they were so cheap and delicious that I just didn’t care.
There’s a production line with several hands scooping rice into the plastic take away container or bowl, before someone else ladles in the curries as per the order. Service is fast and efficient. During peak hour lunch time, the queue is out the door but it does move fast. There are basically two queues – one to order and pay, and another to pick up. Unfortunately, I don’t think there’s a gluten free version of the curries yet.
Very affordable and filling.
Burmese Curry Place is situated in the Sydney Building at the Civic Bus Interchange on Alinga Street. Open Monday to Friday for lunch.
