I took a few days of leave and, of course, planned my days around where I would eat. I decided to finally try out Lonsdale Street Roasters 7 after its expansion onto the second floor of the building. I went in for an early morning breakfast and it was already busy with people hanging around outside waiting for their coffee before heading to work.
The front counter displays all sorts of sugary pastries, muffins and brownies.
The panini’s and take away menu are good lunch options.
I love the cool Canberra art work in the back corner. The same art work also decorates LSR’s take away coffee cups.
After ordering and paying at the counter, I took my block of wood with assigned table number and headed upstairs to see what it was like.
The first thing I noticed were the large floor to ceiling windows looking out onto the beautiful green leafy trees on Lonsdale Street. It’s a very spacious loft with plenty of natural light and seating options – couches by the window, stools alongside the stairs and mix of tables and chairs. The kitchen is upstairs but I couldn’t hear much noise coming from it while sitting by the window.
An retro cool combination of (I think) 70s/80s items scattered around the place including an old television set from that era takes you back in time. One wall in the back corner is covered in old LP covers from Bing Crosby to Sesame Street.
My soy mocha ($4?) arrived in big mug. I’ve had better from LSR 23 and Remedy by LSR so I was disappointed with this one.
My eggs benedict with Pialligo ham, bacon jam, brown butter hollandaise on a home made savoury scone ($17.50) arrived shortly after the coffee. The bacon jam sold me. I had to know what BACON jam tasted like! The Pialligo ham was served in thick slices and was wonderfully salty. The perfectly poached eggs mixed in with the hollandaise sauce. The scones were warm, fresh and scrumptious. But it was the bacon jam that made this dish a winner – bacon bits with onion in a sweet jam. The best way to describe it is that it’s similar to a chutney or relish. It was drool-worthy and unbelievably tasty, especially on the eggs benny.

Service on that weekday morning was friendly and I waited about 15 minutes for my meal to come out. I found the upstairs part very relaxing and can see myself chilling out there more often, while downstairs is busy with people ordering coffees to go.
I made a good choice for breakfast. After seeing the lunch menu, I’m eager to go back for lunch. All BBQ meats are wood smoked on an American hickory pit. Mmm smoked beef brisket! Gluten free and vegetarian options are also available.
Open 7 days a week. LSR7’s Facebook page states they’re doing BBQ & BYO every Friday and Saturday 5-9.30pm at LSR23 with all sorts of barbequed and smoked items.
