Note: I was invited to dine in at Thai Eatery Mawson, however all opinions are my own.
Youโll find Thai Eatery Mawson at the Mawson shops. There are just 5 tables inside so it really is a tiny spot. Our host greets us and brings out the dishes she want us to try.
First up are the chicken curry puffs ($12), featuring homemade, buttery, and extra-crispy pastry that truly impresses. Weโre tempted to order another serving to go but end up forgetting. Another starter is the tofu satay, with lightly fried tofu seasoned just right and served with a delicious house-made satay sauce.

The rock salt prawns ($23) are lightly battered and tossed into what seems like a mountain of rock salt, chilli and garlic. Thereโs an abundance of garlic granules, and it tastes amazing. We both love garlic and want to put it all into a jar to use as a seasoning. They should sell this stuff on its own.

The special chilli basil with minced beef served on an entire eggplant is a traditional dish that I donโt see often on a menu. The beef mince is wonderfully fragrant and tastes even better. My only minor complaint is the eggplant is a tad rubbery, and without knives, it was challenging to cut through it to enjoy with everything else (I will ask for a knife next time!)

We try another staple Thai dish of grilled pork jowl served with a spicy dipping sauce. Weโre told the thinly sliced meat is very common in Thailand. This does not disappoint. The grilled pork jowl is very tender with a little bit of fat which just made it tastier. The spicy sauce truly complements the pork โ chilli flakes, tamarind and fish sauce which really hits the spot.

For dessert, weโre given coconut ice cream (imported from Thailand) with sticky rice, nuts, jackfruit and palm seeds. I grew up with Asian desserts, so this is heaven for me. The coconut ice cream on its own is amazing, made even better with the other components. Sad I had to share with the other two haha.

Iโm glad I got to try some dishes I wouldnโt have normally ordered, which all exceeded expectations. I really want to try some of the noodle dishes next time too.
The eatery isn’t fancy, with just five tables inside, but the food is comforting, with generous portions and, most importantly, fantastic flavour. Head on over to support a local business.
