I thought I’d put together a list of small home bakeries around Canberra that I’ve ordered from or come across the last few months. There are certainly a lot that have popped up! In no particular order:
Doughnut Girls
I initially posted a bit about Doughnut Girls in my Lockdown Discoveries blog post. I’ve tried the original Portuguese tarts, chai-infused Portuguese tarts, coconut bread, coconut bread cake version with lemon frosting, langue de chat, and Taiwanese style twisters. Orders are via DM at this stage with free pick up option (North-side) or a delivery fee.
Wita Makes
I was introduced to Wita from Wita Makes through foodie friends, and since then, I have been following photos of her homemade baked goodies. She bakes bread, buns, various Indonesian and other Asian goods such as risoles and roti sobek. She changes up the menu every few weeks so you need to get in fast as she hand-makes everything herself. My favourite are her mochi donuts (pon de ring) where she has to roll each ball by hand! I hear the coffee buns are magnificent too. Delivery is a very reasonable $6 ACT-wide.
Poked
I was gifted the signature tres leches cake from Poked Cakes and I still salivate when I think about it. The tres leches is super light and soft, and so very moreish. Now you can also choose other flavours such as chocolate or dulce de leche. There’s also a birthday cake version. Orders are easy to make via the website where you can choose the size from an individual portion all the way up to a party-size tray.
Cocoa Bun Buns Co
I came across Cocoa Bun Buns and Co at the Haigh Park Village markets. They specialise in cupcakes (available in Asian-style flavours such as gula mulaka), cake pops, cookies and also do treat boxes and larger occasion cakes. For my birthday, I couldn’t resist trying the bubble tea cake – how cute is it? Unfortunately the flavour was too subtle for me. I’ve also ordered some peanut, cashew and nonya pineapple tart cookies for Lunar New Year which are yummy and cutely packaged. They have a beautiful Instagram page where you can check it out or visit them at the markets.
Stephanie’s Donuts
I was gifted some donuts from Stephanie’s Donuts, who are now also trading at the Haigh Park Village markets. You’ll find an assortment of old-school donuts – from classic cinnamon sugar and chocolate, to ube cream-filled, biscoff, and maple pecan flavours.
Biggie Boy Bake
These are epic cookies in flavours like biscoff, red velvet, and Nutella, with regular special flavours. The cookies are gigantic and heavy. I usually chop these into quarters, and freeze them to have later (after microwaving) with ice cream for a dessert treat. Orders are made on the website and you can click and collect or have it delivered (Australia-wide).
The Memory French Desserts
A small menu of various desserts on the Facebook page. I tried a tiramisu slice, Mont Blanc choux, matcha choux, cheese tart and chocolate hazelnut tart. The tiramisu flavour is on point and it’s very creamy. I would have preferred more sponge to cream ratio. The matcha cream in the choux is fantastic. I love the Mont Blanc but wishing the plain cream inside was also infused with chestnut. The cheesecake tart is the first of the desserts to be demolished! The chocolate tart is very rich so this was the last one to be finished. Orders and payment are via DM, and there’s a weekly cut off time for all orders. Pick up is in Belconnen.
I know there are plenty more home bakeries out there! I just haven’t got to them yet 😉

August 27, 2022 at 9:58 pm (2 years ago)Cocoa bun buns & co cakes are terrible – they look amazing on the outside and completely inedible on the inside. The cake we ordered for my son’s birthday was dry and the buttercream was some sort of fat and tasteless. The cake had a fowl smell of a spice. The kids refused We threw it out and bought a cake from Coles for dessert. It was a horrible experience. August 2022.
