Tucked in between The Durham Castle Arms and Harem Turkish in Kingston’s Green Square is Thai Amarin. Some Kingston local friends and I headed there for dinner one night where I learnt it was a regular go-to for Thai take away before the Foreshore opened up the options. The inside was cosy and homely with paintings of the former King and other pieces from Thailand scattered around the place and each table covered with linen.
We started off with the curry puffs which usually come in a serve of 4, but since there were 5 of us, they kindly obliged to giving us a serve of 5 (unsure of price). Delicious hot little parcels!
Similarly to the curry puff situation, we also had the money bags in a serve of 5. These were very hot, straight from the fryer, but I loved the sweet yet savoury filling with crunchy diced chestnut and pork dipped into sweet fish sauce mixture. Yum.
We ordered three dishes to share between us. The dishes arrived one by one, not too far apart from each other. First was the green chicken curry consisting of bamboo shoots and green beans. I thought it was a nice mild and simple curry but it didn’t blow me away.
The pad see ew was a crowd pleaser – thick rice noodles tossed in dark soy sauce with mixed vegetables. Tasty and very moreish. The choi sum was fresh and crunchy accompaniment.
The satay lamb was another favourite. The lamb was surprisingly very tender and a great protein choice to go with the peanuts. I liked the mix of veggies such as baby corn and bok choy in the dish.
All three dishes were scraped clean. Every person at the table was satisfied with their meals and the service. I could easily go back to try some other dishes. Thai Amarin is a popular Thai take away place, but it’s also good for dining in with its quiet and gentle atmosphere. A good place for having catch ups with friends or family.
Thai Amarin can be found at 48 Jardine Street in Kingston (Green Square). Open weekdays for both lunch and dinner, and weekends for dinner only.
