Ujin Matcha House

Canberra’s first matcha house, Ujin Matcha House, has opened its doors in the CBD, and the menu is a true treat for matcha lovers.

You can choose from four matcha powders, each with its own unique flavour profile. Customise your drink by selecting hot or cold, adjust the sugar level, and pick your preferred milk (no soy, unfortunately). The matcha is carefully measured on scales, hand-whisked, and poured to order, ensuring the freshest experience every time.

I go for the Yumei matcha from Shizuoka, known for its vibrant, smooth, nutty umami aromatics and toasty undertones. I opt for it hot, with no sugar and oat milk. The pure matcha flavour shines through without any added sweetness, perfect for purists. The Yumei also seems to have a richer flavour profile. With three more matcha powders to try, there’s plenty to explore!

Since I ask for no sugar in my matcha, I pair it with the black sugar yokan, a firm jelly-like treat. It offers a lovely contrast, and I find that a little goes a long wayโ€”it’s shareable between two people.

The Matcha Affogato ($13) is a blend of Tokyo milk soft serve and the Hikari house blend matcha. It’s the ideal indulgence on a hot day!

The matcha cheesecake is another highlightโ€”smooth and not overly sweet, with a generous crumble at the bottom that adds the perfect crunch.

Next on my list? The matcha tiramisu, earl grey matcha, Sakura matcha, hojicha, matcha float, and more. Honestly, thereโ€™s so much to try, plus the other three matcha powders!

The space inside is welcoming, with plenty of tables and chairs. If you’re lucky, you might snag the cozy corner by the bonsai, complete with tatami mats (shoes off!). It’s like a little slice of Japan right in the heart of the city.

With only two matcha stations though, be prepared for a bit of a wait when it gets busyโ€”perfect if youโ€™re in no rush.

Highly recommend Ujin Matcha House for any matcha enthusiast!
