I’ve been to Roy Jr a couple of times now. Located on the ground floor of an office building in the middle of the city, the café is spacious and seems to include a lobby area close to the elevators.
I must admit I do feel like I’m banished from the main dining area each time I’ve been – the first time I was seated at one of the stools looking away from the dining area out to the elevators, and the second time we’re seated in the lobby area, and both occasions the place was not full. The lobby area turned out to be a better option with soft comfy arm chairs and a lot more table space with a toddler in tow.
For breakfast, we tried the buttermilk waffles ($22.90) with coconut kaya sauce, berries, passionfruit, berry coulis with a white chocolate macadamia coconut crumb. This is seriously so good. You have to really like the flavour of kaya and coconut to enjoy this. The touch of berries gives a nice tart contrast to the sweetness of the kaya, and I love the nutty caramelised macadamia crunch that goes with it. I savour and enjoy every single mouthful. The scoop of ice cream in its own bowl helps if you like portioning out the ice cream evenly on the waffles.
Mr FPJ orders the full breakfast ($25) substituting eggs with avocado. Toddler ends up spilling his whole babyccino into the big breakfast plate, so most things are rather soggy, but it does look like a yummy wholesome meal with tomatoes, mushrooms, spinach, bacon, and sourdough toast.
We order the banana bread with whipped Biscoff ricotta ($9.90) but toddler doesn’t want to eat it, so we end up taking it to go but forget to smear the biscoff onto it so it’s pretty plain. A little expensive for a slice of banana bread.
On a solo lunch occasion, I order the prawn and crab linguine ($29.50) with peas and pangrattato. It is tossed through with EVOO and nice enough, but the prawn and crab is minimal and it seems a bit basic so it’s not my favourite seafood pasta dish.
I’d love to try other items on the menu like the beef croquettes and the breakfast bruschetta looks like a work of art.
