Pomegranate is a restaurant I’ve walked past over the last decade and I finally booked a table to visit with a friend. It’s lovely inside with hints of Turkey everywhere from the lanterns, tiles and eye. The menu is Modern Australian with Turkish influence.
We’re not hungry enough for a banquet, and we skip any bread and dips.
For entrees, my friend tries the duck ravioli ($28) with onion, pine nut, blackcurrant, pomegranate sauce and carrot puree. Only 3 pieces of ravioli though they are large and fat with stuffing, savoury yet mildly sweet. I love the addition of pine nut so that it’s not too soft and floppy.
I try the Moreton Bay bug ($32) with braised fennel and shiitaki mushroom. The bug is soo tasty and cooked perfectly. I love that there’s some sweetness from the thinly sliced peach. It comes in two little half portions so could be shared between two.
For mains, I have the Cowra lamb cutlets ($40) served with Turkish risoni and cacik. I’m happy to see that it comes in a serve of 4 cutlets. It feels a little oily but is tender with a nice char on the sides. Very protein heavy and light on the risoni, but a filling dish.
My friend had the fish of the day which was the John Dory ($40) with carrot, potatoes, carrot puree and fennel butter. A much lighter main than mine and she enjoyed it.
For dessert, I really want to try the sekepare ($18) made with almond and semolina soaked with honey syrup, tahini halva and a scoop of cardamom ice cream. These look like little friands and remind me a little of baklava but in a more dense cake form. I love baklava so I find this delightful especially with the cardomon ice cream, pistachios and walnuts.
I’m glad I finally got to try Pomegranate. Service is attentive and always appreciate when we get an experienced waiter who is easily able to recommend dishes to us based on our tastes. After our meal, I look up and around to find the entire restaurant is full – impressive for a Wednesday evening. It did start to get a little loud inside but we could still hear each speak without having to shout. An enjoyable dinner and atmosphere. I would love to do a banquet next time to try more dishes, I’ll just have to remember to go there really hungry!
