Gami Chicken

Note: I was invited to dine at Gami, however all opinions are my own.

Gami Chicken and Beer is tucked away at the Canberra Centre along Bunda Street. I haven’t actually been back since my last review in 2019, so when the team asked me to come by again to try some of the new offerings, I couldn’t say no.

We start off with a cocktail and mocktail (there are two choices of each at the time) which arrive in little shakers. Our waitress shakes them for us to pour into our respective glasses. Mr FPJ can’t really taste the alcohol in his cocktail, mine is citrusy yet quite sweet.

As an appetiser, I’m really keen to try the prawn mandu and I am not disappointed. It is stuffed full of prawns and prawn mince, then fried with a thin crispy exterior. Delicious! I highly recommend it.

The menu has been noticeably extended and we order two of the signature dishes. The Chicken Corndue is a corn-based cheese fondue that comes with 8 pieces of boxing chicken, and 8 fried wings dusted with cheese snow. It’s also served with a choice of two dipping sauces and we choose spicy, and soy garlic. We’re expertly shown how to wrap the fondue quickly around our pieces of chicken. I don’t have high expectations, but this is actually really good.

The cheese is very thick, creamy, and tasty but not overpowering. There’s no alcohol or spices. We prefer the corndue with the boxing chicken than the fried chicken. Simpler is best in this case. I feel the two sauces on the side seem unnecessary as I’m quite happy with just the corndue, but it does give you more flavour add-ons.

We try the Unmissable Chicken which is Gami’s most popular dish since it has four of the best-selling fried chicken on the one plate – crispy original, sweet chilli, Galbi with spring onions, and spicy Gochu mayo with mustard dipping sauce in the middle. Mr FPJ appreciates that the spicy Gochu is actually spicy with sliced chillies sprinkled on top. The chicken is juicy, crispy and we honestly have no complaints. We prefer the fried chicken already covered in sauce to the original.

I can’t resist ordering japchae again. Good portion size, yummy noodles, and delicious stir-fried chicken with wood ear mushrooms, onion and capsicum. Very satisfying and one of the best non deep fried chicken options.

You really need to be in the mood for fried chicken as it dominates the menu. If you go with a big group, you can always try the 1.2kg of fried Big Chicken that includes sides. The ‘Gami Delights’ menu offers other dishes such as japchae, seafood pancake and Korean fried rice. There’s also a lunch menu with burgers, bibimbap and various other dishes. Bibimbap is probably the only healthier option on the menu.

So overall, the prawn mandu, chicken corndue and japchae are our favourites. And you can’t go wrong with the Unmissable Chicken if you want a taste of everything. Thank you Gami Chicken & Beer for having us!
