Note: I was invited to L’epi Artisan Bakery to promote some products.
L’epi Artisan Bakery has fast become a favourite with locals at the Chisholm shops. I stopped by some months ago and tried out so many goodies. But firstly, owner Ignace Diompy recently got in touch about their two most popular breads.
The house sourdough ($8) is a 40 hour fermented high hydration sourdough. I’m told it helps with digestion and is known to suit those with a gluten intolerance.
The house baguette ($6.20) is a plain white flour baguette, using a poolish method as a starter, and is one of Ignace’s recipes from France. This baguette does look a little different to other baguettes, it’s a little bit wider, flatter with very pointy ends. I can taste a bit of the sourness so it’s more of a semi-sourdough. If you don’t need a large loaf, than this baguette will do two people easily for a filling lunch.
There are 12 types of sourdough available at the bakery from plain white, seed, rye, jalapeno and cheddar, and olive and herbs. However, both the house sourdough and baguette are L’epi bakery’s most popular products. Other breads include the mauricette – a pretzel-brioche mini baguette from the Alsace region of France. Plus an impressive looking gigantic wheel of bread on the shelf made up of about a dozen small buns. Far too big for me, but a great idea if we ever host a big lunch.
For Easter, the team have made both traditional and chocolate hot cross buns. A 6-pack is $14. I wish I’d taken a pack with me to sample it but I actually forgot. Better get your fix before Easter!
In addition to all the bread, there are cakes, tarts, croissants, danishes, and hot pies.
Chocolate lovers – I absolutely love the stuffed chocolate loaf (photo below in the middle). The entire loaf is a very reasonable $12 and it’s stuffed with chocolate and hazelnuts. You can actually see the chopped hazelnuts in the chocolate. If you love Nutella or Ferrero Rocher, this is a must try. I like how it’s easy to pull apart, with ready to go slices – an excellent option for a morning tea. The chocolate lava mud cake is also super soft and delicious – I’ve gone back twice for this and even Mr FoodPornJournal likes it.

You can enjoy an Ona coffee, pastry, cake or hot meat/veg pie at one of the small tables at L’epi. Note: By 12.20pm on a Saturday, the hot beef pies sold out with only chicken and leek, and vegetarian curry pies left. So get in early for the beef pies.
