Devonshire Tea @ Kitchen Garden at Rodney’s

For $12, you can order a Devonshire Tea at Kitchen Garden at Rodney’s in Pialligo.

A Devonshire Tea consists of scones with jam and cream, and a choice of tea/coffee. On a rainy weekend with a craving for hummingbird cake, I decided to go in to check it out.

The cafe went through a refurbishment a few months ago, and it looks amazing!

I ordered the Devonshire Tea ($12) along with a slice of hummingbird cake ($8). I asked for the earl grey tea to be served weak, and the friendly guy at the register tells me a tea bag is provided so I can easily adjust the strength of the tea myself.

The slice of hummingbird cake arrives first – filled with pineapple, banana, coconut, nuts, cinnamon, other spices with generous amounts of cream cheese frosting in the middle and top of the slice. It’s a tad sweet but that doesn’t actually stop me from demolishing the whole thing. I do leave some cream cheese frosting on the plate to reduce the amount of sweetness – a bit too much for me.

It doesn’t take long for the Devonshire Tea to arrive. The scones look fantastic and they’re are a lot bigger than expected!

The scones are lovely and warm, but I find them quite crumbly. Spreading the jam on was an almost impossible task as the whole top half just fell into crumbs – perhaps I should have waited for it to cool down further. In contrast, the bottom half was much easier to spread the jam and top off with some whipped cream. I still really enjoyed these soft and fluffy scones, and have been back multiple times for the Devonshire Tea. I should point out I only managed to eat one scone after the slice of cake, and took the other scone home.

Bookings essential as there are limited seats.
