With a further 4 weeks of lockdown announced in Canberra, I thought I’d throw together a quick list of some lockdown discoveries. I hope everyone is doing okay!
Donut Girls
I had been following Donut Girls on Instagram for a couple of weeks, when my friend Tales of a Confectionist sent me a surprise delivery of the signature Portuguese tarts. These come in a 6-pack and the instructions say to bake in the oven for 5 minutes which is well worth it for an amazing aroma throughout the house and to ensure crunchiness in the puff pastry. These are so good! Donut Girls also sell other items like soft fluffy coconut bread. Delivery is just $5 across Canberra. Check out their Instagram and Facebook page to order.
Get Crackin Brownies
You may know them as Get Crackin Creme Brulee, now the team have pivoted into making Get Crackin’s loaded brownie slabs. If you’re a chocoholic, this is something you’re going to want to try at least once. There’s different types like mars bar, triple choc, peanut butter, biscoff, choc mint and more at $25 a pop, plus delivery. At this point in time, orders open on a Saturday for the following Friday delivery. Check their website for more info.
Dough it yourself
Pre-made cookie dough in flavours like choc chip, peanut butter and biscoff. Slice, roll and bake the cookie dough at home to make your home smell delicious. These are $15 a pop and are sold at various stockists around Canberra. I’ve tried the biscoff and sliced too thinly (as per photo below). I recommend slicing thicker cuts and then rolling them into balls before putting them on the baking tray. This makes them fatter and gooey-ier! See Dough it Yourself’s website, Facebook and Instagram page for more.
Mrs Kim’s Donuts (now permanently shut)
Edit January 2022 – With over 200 people with food poisoning from this place, this donut shop permanently shut down in late 2021.
This donut shop in Kingston opened pre-lockdown, and sells any 6 donuts for $15 or one for $3.50. The 6-pack comes in a box for easy transportation. The donut itself is surprisingly soft and fluffy. Choose from open donuts filled with various creams/custards, or plain donuts with various glazes on top. The dark chocolate and snickers are my favourites so far.
Black Cat Cocktail
Mr FPJ’s workplace sent employees a mini hamper from Black Cat Cocktails. It was such a nice afternoon surprise. Filled with cheese, crackers, fruit, DIY salted caramel espresso martini using Unicorn Spirits, fudge from Edible Favours, licorice and chocolate. Black Cat Cocktails are a private and mobile bartending service, and it looks like you can add various cocktails, whisky and gin tastings to your hampers. Orders are currently through direct messages on their Facebook and Instagram page.
Dumplinlins
I’ve been following this account because DUMPLINGS! All dumplings are handmade. Prices start at $24 for a dozen, plus $5 delivery around Canberra. I haven’t tried them yet but it’s on the list.
La Baguette by R&M
Though the shopfront is closed, deliveries of La Baguette’s French pastries, bread, tarts and authentic home cooked meals are available. Meals change weekly and are announced on La Baguette’s Facebook, Instagram and website. Order online through La Baguette’s website and it’s $5 delivery across Canberra.
The Boat House (Formulab)
Formulab cakes are being sold at The Boat House. There are three choices – tiramisu, blackberry, and strawberry cheesecake with more being added. Prices are steep at $15 for one slice of cake, but I love cakes so I had to try some – I picked tiramisu and blackberry. Even though I knew the tiramisu was a more unique and modern version as described on the website, I still prefer the traditional. There’s no coffee-soaked sponge, instead just a layer of coffee cream. It didn’t do it for me unfortunately. It’s more of a pear and coffee slice than a tiramisu. The blackberry was my favourite of the two and had a nice contrast to the light layer of chocolate. The cakes as well as The Boat House dine at home meals can be ordered online via the The Boat House website and then collected direct to boot.
Tokyo Canteen
In addition to the regular takeaway menu, Tokyo Canteen are now offering freshly made dumplings (to be cooked at home) 6 for $8 with various fillings, poke bowls, sushi, and take home ramen kits. Tokyo Canteen are located in Kingston at the Eyre Street Market. Check out their Instagram for more details.
