Hot Cross Buns

This year, I tried hot cross buns from three bakeries – Danny’s Bakery (my favourite), Three Mills Bakery, and Sonoma.

Danny’s Bakery

Danny’s in Narrabundah has been around for years and since having my first taste back in 2014, this is my favourite hot cross bun in Canberra so far. These are the only sourdough hot cross buns that I’m aware of, they’re gigantic and great value for money ($9.50 for a 6-pack) from a traditional bakery.

They come powdered or plain. Since I’m an early riser, I usually head there between 8-9am and they’re still warm from the oven!

I love the ratio of slightly more bread to sultana. It’s perfect for me.

Three Mills Bakery

I used to think the hot cross buns from Three Mills had too much fruit in it – sultanas, currants and orange peel. Either the ratio has changed or my tastes have changed, but I had another go at these and ended up buying a dozen the following weekend (not all for us!).

The 6-pack is $15 while a dozen is $25.

Sonoma Bakery

This year was my first time trying Sonoma’s range of ‘Not X Buns’ finished off with an ‘S’ rather than a cross. Definitely the most expensive of the three at $4 each or $22 for a 6-pack. I initially asked for two traditional and two chocolate buns, but got persuaded in buying a 6-pack (I should have just stuck with 4) which look so nicely glazed.

The traditional have a mix of dried fruit – raisins, cranberries and orange peel. I find that they’re too fruity for my liking. But this is great if you love lots of dried fruit.

The chocolate Not X Buns have chunks of Belgian dark chocolate in them, and are much softer and fluffier than the traditional. I didn’t mind these but Mr FPJ didn’t like them at all – he instantly didn’t like the taste of the glaze (not sure what’s in the glaze but the packaging states it’s steeped in spices and coffee).

Where’s your favourite hot cross bun?
