Eating in Taipei – Part 4 – Modern Toilet Restaurant

Following on from Eating in Taipei – Ningxia Night Markets, and the Shilin Night Markets, something else that was on my list to try was Modern Toilet restaurant.

Now if you don’t like the sound of that, you probably shouldn’t read this. Itโ€™s not for everyone. As the name of the restaurant suggests, the restaurant fit out is toilet-themed with food served in toilet/urinal-shaped dinnerware. So hereโ€™s your last chance to skip this post.

Modern Toilet Taipei

We headed up the stairs where one of the staff greeted us (we made a reservation a few weeks prior) and showed us to our table. Two of the seats were actual (non-working) toilets with decorated lids that were shut so we could sit down.

The glass table top showed two sinks with poo-shaped decorations in them. There was tiled wall art in the restaurant decorated with poo-shaped and toilet-themed everything, as well as poo-shaped hanging lights. Yes itโ€™s that kind of restaurant.

The menu had items like curries, pasta and hot pots. I had read reviews about the food, all which stated it wasnโ€™t great, so I had come prepared to have an average meal but it was the whole experience in a quirky-themed restaurant that I was after. An order form was provided where we could select what we wanted to try including any extras. For drinks, we ordered a bubble milk tea and a honey milkshake. These could be served in regular glasses or in small urinals for an extra fee. We were going toilet-themed all the way, and ticked the box for small urinals. My original bubble milk tea was surprisingly nicer than I thought it would be with freshly made tapioca pearls. The drink was larger than it looked in the photo – the equivalent to a large bubble tea.

For our mains, Mr FPJ chose the chicken curry to make the toilet-themed dinner even more ridiculous.

This came served in a mini toilet shaped sizzling plate, with a bowl of rice, broth and some tofu (underneath the poo-shaped cover).

I chose the beef hotpot with vegetables, tofu and fish balls, which also came with rice.

In agreement with other reviews, the food wasnโ€™t anything special but filled our bellies. My hotpot was very bland but at least it was the healthier option of the two.

We didnโ€™t stop there. We both ordered dessert of chocolate ice cream in the shape of poo served in mini bidets. The ice cream was more of a sorbet as it was very icy and watery.

That ended our experience at Modern Toilet. Service was friendly and staff must be used to tourists as they gently steered their way around people taking photos of everything. Some broken English was spoken by our waiter which we appreciated. The menus do have English on them so you can always just point. Before leaving, we checked out the actual toilets which were pretty rad.
