Kettle and Tin in Mawson offers an all day menu, cruffins, coffee, fresh juices and milkshakes. At brunch o’clock, the sun hits the windows and lights up the already bright cafe. There are a few small tables outside in the main courtyard of the Mawson shops – a popular choice in the warmer months.
I ordered a soy mocha ($4) which was smooth with hardly any bitterness to it. I liked that the chocolate had been mixed throughout and not just sitting at the bottom of the cup.
My friend and I couldn’t resist the French toast with fresh fruit, vanilla bean ice cream, oreo crumble and raspberry sauce ($22). The thick slices of brioche were super soft and I liked that they weren’t drenched in maple syrup. The melted vanilla ice cream was perfect in ensuring the dish wasn’t too dry. We liked that the dish wasn’t too sweet and had plenty of fresh fruit to make it a somewhat healthy dish.
I went back to try one of the signature dishes – the Kettle Benedict ($20.50) with poached eggs, roasted cherry tomatoes, baby spinach on a toasted croissant with house made hollandaise. There is a choice of bacon/ham/salmon and I chose the salmon. This twist to the classic eggs benny provides a more buttery element from the croissant. Mixed with the perfectly poached eggs and smooth hollandaise, it’s no wonder this is a crowd pleaser.
Vegetarians will also be satisfied with a regularly changing vegetarian big breakfast on the menu.
There are lots of sides to choose from to add onto your dish including a bowl of potato gems! I’d be keen to go back for the Kettle cheeseburger and to try some other items on the menu.
Note there are no menu alterations during peak times and the kitchen closes at 2pm. Reservations can be made Monday to Friday only, so get in early on the weekend.
