10 Must Eats in Canberra right now

With a full-time job on top of this blog, I never have the time to write about everything. But I thought I’d bring to your attention some delicious meals I’ve had recently. In no particular order…

1. Peking duck burger from Secret Garden Manuka

We were invited to dine at Secret Garden in Manuka (tucked away inside Manuka Village) and discovered an amazing Peking duck burger ($23). Thick slices of perfectly cooked and marinated Peking duck, with hoisin chilli onion jam, rocket, cucumber and shallots served on toasted Turkish bread, and it comes with a side of chips. It looks great and tastes better. Mr FPJ loved it so much he went out of his way on his lunch break from work to travel to Manuka and purchase one to take away.

2. Southern Fried Chicken burger from A Bite to Eat

A Bite to Eat in Chifley uses crushed nacho chips in its Southern Fried chicken, giving it awesome crunch. It’s also well seasoned with various herbs and spices, stuffed with herbed smashed avocado, chipotle slaw, and lettuce in a potato bun, and served with shoestring fries ($20). Yum.

3. French toast from Teddy Picker’s

Delicious and delicate French toast ($18) that changes with the season. You can’t go wrong with French toast at Teddy Picker’s. The below was a weekend special Peach Melba with raspberry jam, vanilla bean ice cream and milk crumb.

4. Tiramisu gelato from Gelato Messina

This is my favourite flavour from Gelato Messina. I love the real tiramisu chunks mixed in with the ice cream. It’s heavenly! I usually get two scoops so that I can have tiramisu, plus try out a new flavour each visit.

5. Taro coconut shake from High Road

If you love taro and coconut, High Road in Dickson do a fabulous taro and coconut shake ($10). Sweet and delicious and blitzed with ice.

6. Rotisserie from Terra

Terra’s rotisserie of meats is just so tasty. Choose from charcoal chicken, sticky lamb ribs, 6hr smoked beef short rib, spit roasted pork belly, braised beef and more! Terra also recently opened for dinner Thursday to Sunday nights.

7. Mongolian kangaroo spring rolls from Momoda

Momoda offer Mongolian kangaroo spring rolls ($9 for two pieces) that are generously stuffed full of delicious kangaroo meat, vegetables, herbs and spices. We didn’t know what to expect but the flavours were amazing and we both would gladly order these again. They also came with Sichuan chilli salt, and a wombok and ginger salad.

8. ‘Holy Crumpet’ from Toasted

The ‘Holy Crumpet’ ($13) is made from sourdough and topped with berry jam, pecans and coconut flakes. The cinnamon butter is divine and really makes this dish a winner so let it melt in. As per the name, it only comes with one crumpet, but you can add an extra crumpet for $6. Quite pricey for a second crumpet and it’s probably not needed as the crumpet itself is a tad dense and filling. Recommended if you have a sweet tooth.

9. Banh mi from Ms Ba Co

Ms Ba Co out at Majura Park Shopping Centre have various $8 banh mi’s on the menu. The pork belly banh mi and lemongrass chicken banh mi are favourites at this point in time. All banh mi’s are stuffed full with fresh ingredients and meat (or tofu for vegetarians). Great value for money and it’s quick.

10. Creamy fried chicken from KorBQ

I’ve only had this creamy fried chicken ($24) from KorBQ in Civic once, but I can’t stop thinking about it. There’s something about that creamy white sauce. This is a favourite fried chicken dish amongst foodie friends.
