Replacing what was Mood Food in Braddon, is Black Sheep Bar & Grill. The fit out instead is basically the same with the addition of a funky art print of a ram on one wall. A friend and I headed there for breakfast to check it out. We were both greeted warmly upon entering and shown to a table.
The menu has a range of items for breakfast including coffee, freshly squeezed juices and smoothies. I ordered the Wake N Bake breakfast pizza ($18) with mushrooms, crispy prosciutto, caramelised onion, gruyere cheese and a poached egg. The pizza base was thin and crispy with minimal toppings. I personally prefer a slightly chewier dough but this wasn’t too bad. The egg had been overcooked so it was a little dry on the pizza.
V ordered her usual flat white which arrived at the table quickly.
She ordered the Mr Bean ($16) of roast chorizo, black and butter beans, bacon and mushrooms topped with a poached egg and parmesan. It also came with buttered sourdough on the side. She found it very filling and didn’t even touch the bread.
About a week later, I went back with a friend for lunch. I hadn’t seen the lunch menu and didn’t know what to expect. There were only 5 mains on the menu such as braised pork shoulder, fillet steak, snapper, chicken and a creamed soy schnitty which was interesting. Prices were expensive with an average of $28 for a main. We weren’t prepared to spend that much on lunch. Fortunately there were $12 lunch specials of artisan jaffles. Five types of jaffles were available, including a vegetarian option, and all came with sourdough bread, hand cut wedges and salad. I chose the fillet steak with confit tomato, spinach and mozzarella. The jaffle had a nice simple filling with a thin slice of steak. It was a little difficult biting into it without pulling out the whole slice of steak altogether. The half-potato portion of wedges were a nice addition but not crispy enough for me. The salad was just a few leafy greens tossed in a fresh vinaigrette to jazz up the wooden serving board.
My friend ordered the pulled pork jaffle with caramelised fennel and bocconcini (no photo). We found service wasn’t the most attentive and we needed to wave someone down to take our order. It took about 25 minutes for the jaffles to arrive. I’m hoping for other lunch specials will be added apart from jaffles. Overall, the atmosphere was pleasant if a bit dark inside, however the food wasn’t spectacular enough for me to go back.
