Did you know that Bean & Grain has opened another cafe in Dickson? The cafe is much larger than its Fyshwick counterpart which is still in operation Thursdays to Sundays at the Fyshwick Fresh Food markets. I found out there’s even a Bean & Grain Express shop on King Street in Deakin.
The Dickson cafe is spacious and inviting with exposed brick walls, a tiled front counter, wooden shelves and floorboards, and plenty of lighting. I like the sign sitting on one of the shelves – ‘Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first!’ Definitely applies to me 🙂
Bi-fold doors open up one end of the cafe and there’s plenty of indoor and outdoor dining with a few communal tables thrown in.
My soy mocha ($3.50) was just right with equal parts chocolate and coffee. Best of all, it was creamy and velvety smooth.
There are specials written up on the chalkboard inside that change regularly. The breakfast menu including breakfast bagels is available until midday. I was there for lunch and ordered the prosciutto bagel ($15) with tomato, spinach, field mushroom and confit garlic cream cheese. No spinach but it seemed to have been substituted with rocket. A side of rocket salad with a bit of coleslaw on top was also provided. The little portion of prosciutto was enough to provide a salty hit on top of the generous serving of garlic cream cheese. The mushroom was deliciously juicy and worked well combined with the other ingredients. The only annoying thing was the blunt butter knife provided that couldn’t cut through the dense bagel. I gave up and used my hands instead.
The front counter displays yummy looking croissants, danishes, tarts and cakes. There are also loaves of bread and various bagels that can be purchased displayed on the back shelf.
I decided to purchased the last mini baked cheesecake ($6.90) to take home. This was absolute heaven! Soft and fluffy cheesecake filling, perfect crumbly base and lightly dusted with icing sugar. It doesn’t taste too cheesy either. Very impressed.
This is a fairly large portion which I thought could be shared between 2 or 3 people, but I couldn’t stop eating it! No I didn’t finish the whole thing by myself, but I can see that it would be easy to do so. Highly recommended.
I noticed this sign outside (near Commonwealth Bank) after I’d left. Half price bread as an opening special.
Bean & Grain in Dickson is open seven days a week from 7am to 3pm. It’s located at the Dickson shops, between Harris Scarfe and Hudson’s.
