Dessert train @ Adriano Zumbo Patissier

I’d been wanting to try out Adriano Zumbo’s patisserie for nearly 2 years, but since no one else I know likes desserts and sweets, there was never an opportunity to go. I was determined to try out the dessert train and patisserie at the Star during my trip to Sydney over the long weekend. My partner agreed to try it with me YAY!

Adriano Zumbo at the Star is split into 2 separate rooms – the patisserie where the numerous zumbo cakes are displayed and zumbarons can be bought, and the dessert train.

Dessert train

The dessert train is smaller than I expected. Each plate is $7, except the zumbarons) and you can pick whatever you want. I must admit, it was a disappointment. There were only 6 desserts that didn’t look appealing to me. This consisted of a lamington, chocolate and caramel fondant, creme caramel, zumbarons and two other desserts. None were spectacular. I guess I had really high expectations of Zumbo creations.

I decided to have a zumbarons plate ($10) while I waited for more to be added onto the dessert train. Each plate had a mixture of different macarons. The one I chose had salted popcorn, salted caramel, lemon and cherry ripe flavours. These were pretty damn good! I really liked the popcorn and the cherry ripe. Great strong flavours and I love how they were slightly chewy.

I waited expecting more variety on the dessert train but nothing new came around. Soft serve cones ($1.80) of two flavours of the day were available. One flavour was creme caramel and the other was spiced pumpkin. I tried the creme caramel – a yummy ice cream with lots of vanilla bean in it.

There is a second menu where you can order one of Zumbo’s small cakes. These looked much more appealing.

I decided on the Dirty Dani ($9) – caramel creme chantilly, passionfruit creme, salted caramel mou, hazelnut dacquoise, caramel crunch and milk chocolate plaques. I loved the different elements layered on top of each other. There were equal portions of everything so nothing was too overpowering. Loved the caramel and hazelnut elements. Everything worked so well together. Loved it!

We also tried Eric is Bananaman – chocobanana mousse, lemon and banana creme, flourless chocolate cake, caramelised almonds, and salted dark caramel plaques. The salted dark caramel plaques were very strong and salty. The chocobanana mousse was thick and very rich. I liked the thin layer of chocolate cake on the bottom, and the whole almonds inside were a nice touch. Overall, I thought this was extremely rich as it was mostly mousse and don’t think I’d order it again. Definitely needs to be shared between two or more.

Overall, I was disappointed with the dessert train, but the individual cakes were nice. I’d be interested in tasting the other cakes they have on display next time.
