A friend suggested I check out Bean and Grain for their awesome bagels. I must admit, I’m not a huge fan of bagels – they’re usually dry and dense.
Bean and Grain bake their bagels and other breads fresh every day. Located at the Fyshwick fresh food markets, you need to get in early-ish (before 1pm) as their bagels sell out fast.
I ordered the roast lamb bagel with caramelised onion, peaches, rocket and grain mustard mayo which came out with a side of potato salad.
Verdict: mouth wateringly delicious! The pieces of peaches complemented the thinly sliced warm roast lamb – simple concept with great flavour. The potato salad was a nice touch too.
As the bagels are quite small, portions are on the smaller side. However, there are cakes and pastries available if you need a little something extra.
I went back a few months later to try out another bagel, but as it was late in the afternoon (2pm), all the bagels had sold out. The girl at the counter suggested (and prefers) substituting the bagel for a focaccia instead. So I ordered the pork tenderloin with fig, caramelised onion, apple chutney, baby spinach and brie which came with a side of coleslaw.
Brilliant – just as good as the roast lamb. The focaccia is also bigger than a bagel and doesn’t have a hole in the middle – so the serving was quite large 🙂
I’ll need to slowly go through the entire bagel menu. And would love to try their breakfast bagels one day. They don’t take bookings and seating is quite limited so get in early!
