I had never heard of this place until I was invited to a friend’s birthday lunch, so I was happy to try out some soul food. Soulfood Kitchen provide ‘New Orleans’ delights on their menu such as gumbo, creole and jambalaya. It is owned by USA celebrity chef Victor Kimble who you can see working in the kitchen.
Victor’s buffalo chicken wings ($16) were the first items most people ordered including myself. They were pretty tasty if a bit small. Not the type you can get in the states which are smothered in sauce. These were more like spicy deep fried wings.

Bizarrely and quite out of character, I somehow forgot to take a photo of my own meal – the shrimp, chicken and sausage gumbo ($21). Doh. I think I must have been so excited to try it that it must’ve slipped my mind. The verdict: Disappointing as it tasted very bland. I was expecting beautiful flavours from the shrimp and sausage but it didn’t seem to come through.
My partner ordered Victor’s smokin ribs ($32) – these were tender and fell right off the bone, smothered in a yummy BBQ sauce.

My friend’s sweet potato pie for dessert – on my ‘to eat’ list.

Meals are a tad pricey but I enjoyed trying most things. Similar to Smoque in civic without the big noisy crowds. Nice basic interior. Hanging on the walls are framed photos of Victor with celebrities such as Stevie Wonder and the Harlem Globe Trotters who he’s cooked for.
Though disappointed with the gumbo, I’d go back and try some of the other dishes.
Soulfood Kitchen also offer cooking classes, teaching people how to cook authentic New Orleans style cuisine.
(On a side note, I’ve noticed the restaurant’s website is using my amateur photos. Kind of pleased about that).
