Update: May 2023 – It was about time I updated this list. Here are 5+ places for pancakes or hotcakes (putting them in the same category) around Canberra. In no particular order:
Bean and Table (Kingston Foreshore)
Think two thick steaming blueberry hotcakes topped with coconut ice cream, blueberry compote and maple syrup. At $22, I can’t actually finish off a plate so it’s perfect to share between two.
Dockside (Kingston Foreshore)
You get a three-stack of fluffy ricotta hotcakes ($22) with maple syrup, vanilla mascarpone, vanilla ice cream, cookie crumble and fresh seasonal fruit.
Typica (Manuka)
The hotcakes at Typica change seasonally. The last set I tried were the biscoff hot cakes ($22) with fresh fruit, marshmallows, vanilla ice cream and cookie crumb. The hot cakes are massive and can easily be shared.
Penny University (Kingston)
There are usually weekend pancake specials at Penny University. I like that they are always trying to do something different. The most recent one I tried were the tiramisu pancakes.
Wildflour (Fyshwick)
I haven’t tried the pancakes at Wildflour in Fyshwick, but their knafeh pancakes with rosewater syrup and pistachio gelato look amazing!
As You Like It Cafe (Civic/Acton)
The pancake menu regularly changes and I’ve had the pleasure of trying the matcha pancakes with black sesame ice cream, strawberries and blueberries. The pancakes come in a stack of three, are always fluffy, and taste fantastic! They can also make vegan pancakes on request.
Their red velvet pancakes are also good!
Double Shot (Deakin)
Double Shot is another cafe that has regularly changing pancake specials. A memorable special were the vanilla pancakes with chocolate chunks, Gaytime icecream, chocolate coated popping candy, crushed peanuts, housemade honeycomb and a mini chocolate coated cone.
For something different…
For something a little different, Puddle Cafe in Franklin specialise in home made crumpets which are available as a crumpet stack. I tried the tiramisu crumpet generously topped with cream and ladyfingers. The sponge was a bit dry for my liking and I didn’t need the excess amount of cream, but the crumpet itself is delicious so I’m keen to go back to try some of the other crumpets.
