With all the new café openings to keep up with, it’s nice to go back to an established café. Two for Joy has been in Kingston’s Green Square for years, and is still going strong. I recently rediscovered it when trying to find a place for weekend breakfast within walking distance.

The weekly changing breakfast specials menu has some pretty cool sounding dishes and it’s always difficult to pick one thing (I’m usually dining solo in the mornings). And because it changes each week, I never get to try everything I want.

The breakfast special of raspberry, apple and rhubarb pancakes with cranberry compote, pavlova topper, fresh fruit and lemon curd ricotta ($18) was light, filled with lots of fruit and not overly sweet. It was almost a healthy meal (almost).

The racho tortilla espagnola ($19.50) with potato leek, red pepper, and egg hash came in a skillet topped with kalamata olives, grilled chorizo and pecorino cheese. It was served with a house made corn, cheese and tomato quesadilla. I liked the nice personal extra touch of a stuffed quesadilla rather than a boring plain tortilla. This was a really filling meal and tasty.

The avo toast on sourdough toast with a poached egg, sriracha bacon, fried haloumi cheese, red capsicum/tomato relish and spinach ($19) was another breakfast special. This is one of the more uncomplicated dishes I’ve ordered but a very generous portion. I didn’t like the floppy soft bacon on top, but other than that it was nice and simple.

The chocolate milkshake is filled with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream (unsure of price) with plenty of chocolate sauce.

The Duchess ($19) was a potato vol-au-vent filled with soft egg scramble flavoured with tarragon on creamed baby mushrooms and spinach, topped with warm leg ham was delicious. The creamy sauce with mushrooms was perfectly seasoned and salted, and really made this dish pop. Plenty of potato and the softest and creamiest scrambled eggs. Yum.

I must admit I’ve never actually ordered anything from the regular menu! The breakfast specials are always so tempting. I don’t know how they are able to be inventive with so many different dishes on the specials. Two for Joy is busy on weekends and sometimes it’s difficult to get someone’s attention, particularly if sitting outside. But it’s low key, with a quiet atmosphere and a unique specials menu.
