Ona coffee’s latest venture, Highroad, opened its doors in Dickson late last year. Reservations are not accepted on weekends, and only tables of 8 or more can be reserved on weekdays. On a Saturday morning, it was about a 20 minute wait for a table of four. The cafe is very spacious holding a long bar down one side with seats at the counter, some cute booths and tables on the ground and mezzanine floors.

The all day menu provides a unique take on your regular breakfast items such as avocado, poached eggs, and vegemite ricotta on sourdough or the mushroom, poached egg, hummus, buckwheat, wattle seed cracker and blue cheese scone ($18). I ordered the latter and found that all the elements really complemented each other. The cheesy savoury scone helped tie everything together. I’m glad I ordered some tea to go with the meal as it was a pretty small portion. Tasty but not overly filling.

My friend had the beautiful looking 40-degree salmon with salsa, a boiled egg, sesame, avocado & wasabi purée, kewpie, potato & jalapeno bread ($24).

Another had the sausage and egg roll – cheddar, pickled cucumber, coriander mayo, bulldog sauce, potato bun ($15) which he said was delicious.

And another friend had the  waffle with eucalyptus gel, chocolate, milk crumble, mascarpone, berry textures ($18).

I headed back for lunch a few weeks later and fell in love with the taro and coconut shake ($10). It had such a beautiful taro flavour and I loved the extra coconut flakes on top.

I also tried the beef burger with brie, mustard aioli, pickled shitake, iceberg lettuce and a potato bun ($20). Unfortunately the burger was drowning in aioli, so much so that it overpowered everything. The beef pattie itself was bland and didn’t have much seasoning. I couldn’t taste the pickled shitake but that’s probably due to all the aioli. The stand out item on the plate were the golden crunchy chips and the BBQ sauce.

Service was a little slow during brunch but that’s to be expected when they had a full house. It was a little loud inside so if you want a quieter spot, try and get a table outside. I do like the various unique brunch options and would like to try more. Brunch portion sizes were on the small side but ordering a drink to fill you up should do the trick. The bright side is that you won’t be too full if you have lunch plans. Highroad have also introduced a dinner menu which I must check out soon.
