The last time I dined at B-One Korean Restaurant in the city was probably 6 years ago. I’ve strolled past so many times and had been meaning to go back. After near the 100th time of passing by their advertised cheap $12 lunch specials, I finally walked in to try it out again. There were six lunch specials available Monday to Friday. The options were:

  • Teriyaki chicken rice
  • Beef bulgogi rice
  • Spicy chicken rice
  • Spicy pork rice
  • Calamari and pork rice
  • Pork cutlet

All lunch sets included a side dish and soup.

I chose the calamari and pork rice, and of course forgot to ask for mild chilli. The dish was spicy but tolerable with cold water. This was quick to come out followed shortly afterwards with a large plate of my main as well as the soup.

For $12, this was great value for money especially for such a large portion. I tasted a lot of garlic, chilli and sesame in the dish. The calamari hadn’t been overcooked and there was plenty of it. I did find that the pork was a little fatty and the stir fry was oilier than I would have liked it. But again, this was a great filling meal. The soup was more of a light bone broth, probably pork bones, and was a nice non-spicy accompaniment to the meal.

On another occasion, I decided to go back to try more of the lunch specials menu and ordered the teriyaki chicken. I was confused as it didn’t taste anything like teriyaki, and I could have sworn it was honey chicken. I even got up to ask the waitress whether there had been a mistake, but she said this was their version of teriyaki chicken. It had been very lightly battered, was very sweet and I honestly couldn’t taste teriyaki. Each to their own.

B-One actually gets pretty busy during the lunch time rush. I noticed several Koreans dining in which is a good sign that the place is legit. I was warmly greeted when I stepped inside the restaurant and told I could pick any table I wanted. A bottle of cold water and glass were provided, without asking for it, after I sat down. It took longer than expected to take my lunch order, and found I had to stare and wave someone down, before someone indicated they would be right over. There seemed to only be two people working the floor that day. The rest of the non-specials menu looked a tad pricey, so if you want to test it out, try and get in on a weekday for one of the $12 lunch specials.

B-One Korean Restaurant can be found at 175 City Walk in Civic. Open seven days a week for lunch and dinner.
