I was told to try out EQ Cafe and Lounge years ago, and although it was always on my list of places to visit, it just never happened until recently. I found myself with a free morning and was close to Deakin, so I finally stopped in for breakfast. The cafe was larger than I expected with plenty of seating both indoors and outdoors. The first thing I gravitated to was the cake and pastry display cabinet – there was so much to choose from! EQ also bake their own bread and pastries in their bakehouse.
It was a cold Canberra morning so the baked egg dish was a no-brainer for me. I was going to have a side of cake but since my eyes are bigger than my stomach, I heard myself say, ‘and the gigantic apricot tart please!’
My soy mocha ($5) arrived within about 10 minutes. This came in a large mug and was thick and creamy. Nice balance of coffee and chocolate.
My shakshouka baked eggs ($17) came out shortly after. Baked eggs are probably my number 1 go-to breakfast food when it’s cold. Served in a large pan, I was taken aback at the big serving size. By far the biggest serving of baked eggs in Canberra that I’ve come across. The baked eggs were steaming hot when they arrived at the table. Both eggs oozed yolk when poked. The harissa spiced tomato and capsicum mix wasn’t too sour and seemed to balance out with the yoghurt on top. I also loved the fact that two large pieces of multigrain grilled toast were provided, and already buttered. I’ve found that most places in Canberra only provide 1 piece or less nowadays, so this was a bonus for me. A hearty meal indeed!
The apricot tart was all flakey and buttery goodness. I only had a few bites and asked for a take away bag to take it home with me. Great value at only $3.50!
Overall, I had a very pleasant and filling breakfast. I thought there was good variety on the menu with Belgium waffles, eggs benny, brekkie bowl, a paleo breakfast and more, with so many sweet treats to choose from. The onsite bakery also takes cake orders for special occasions. Apparently breakfast specials are offered on weekdays. Service was polite and quick. Orders were paid for at the counter and a table number provided. The cafe seemed family friendly with lots of kids running around and prams throughout the place.
