A friend and I caught up at Burger Hero in Braddon for lunch one weekday. We had both heard of Burger Hero but had never tried it. There were a few tables and chairs in the small eatery, however it looked to be mainly a casual take away joint. There were 14 burgers on the menu ranging from a regular uncomplicated cheese burger to various chicken and a vegan burger. I was tossing up between the Southern Smoke with hickory grilled beef and bacon, the chicken bacon burger or the Hero original. Some of the burgers had an option of coming in small, regular or double sizes. There were sweet potato fries, cheese fries and chilli cheese fries that were tempting.

I decided to try the Hero Original with grilled beef, American cheese, Spanish onion, lettuce and tomato (regular size $12) with cheesy fries ($4). Though the plain beef pattie didn’t have many herbs or spices in it, it was thick, medium-cooked and so juicy. The waffle fries were crunchy, and only lightly salted. The sauce wasn’t the stringy cheese I had imagined, and instead a bit more like creamy béchamel sauce with a few dollops here and there. I found it made some of the fries sitting at the bottom soggy, so I tried to eat as many of the crunchy ones as I could before they succumbed to sogginess.

My friend ordered the vegestack ($12.50) which came with grilled haloumi, lettuce, herbed eggplant, zucchini, roast peppers, basil pesto and dairy free aioli with a serve of plain fries ($3). He really enjoyed the burger and would go back to try the sweet vegan burger.

Service was quick with orders paid at the counter, and the burgers arriving within 10 minutes. The burgers were a decent size, not as big as a brodburger, but still a nice handful. I was happy with the portion of waffles fries too and didn’t end up finishing them. There was appropriate menu signage – out the front, scattered on the tables and by the counter. We did notice it got quite hot inside with no air conditioning, though most of the lunch orders were all take away. Just in case you’re not in a burger mood, there were wraps available too.

Burger Hero can be found on 31 Mort Street in Braddon.
