My friend and I headed to the The Raw Kitchen in Fremantle for lunch one Saturday. The Raw Kitchen is a plant-based restaurant with an ethos of healthy sustainable living. The restaurant is set inside a large warehouse flooded with lots of natural light coming through the skylights.

As it was my first time there, our waitress explained that everything on the menu was gluten free, and all dishes are plant-based without using dairy, refined sugar or additives. There were certain raw cold dishes which had been marked with a small (r) on the menu. Our drink orders were taken first and I chose the turmeric golden latte ($6) with ginger, black pepper, honey and house made macadamia milk. The latte was a tad spicy but I really enjoyed it. My friend ordered the matcha latte ($5) with agave and coconut milk.

We started with the white bean and harissa dip with toasted gluten free sourdough ($9). I was asked whether I wanted garlic on the sourdough, and well, of course I wanted garlic! The bean dip was amazingly smooth and creamy. There was a hint of lemon in it and the harissa chilli oil on top was a fantastic accompaniment. My friend and I both agreed that we could have simply eaten the dip with a spoon and been happy. Best of all, it was guilt-free eating! I had forgotten the sourdough was gluten-free, it tasted just like regular bread and I loved the light garlic pasted on top.

The live pizza slice ($14) was on a buckwheat base with tomato sauce, cashew cheese, avocado, fresh tomatoes, capsicum, olives, mushroom and basil. This was one of the raw food items and better than I expected. The fresh ingredients helped make this a good dish. I couldn’t really taste the cashew or the ‘cheese’ in the cashew cheese which was rather bland compared to the other stronger ingredients such as capsicum and olive. Because the buckwheat base hadn’t been cooked, it was very soft and slightly crumbly. It would not have been able to hold all the pizza toppings without falling apart. This was definitely something I’d consider serving as an appetiser at dinner parties. So fresh and healthy.

My friend chose the tomato pasta ($25) made with zucchini noodles, tomato sauce, avocado, mushroom, olives and ‘parmesan’ cheese. This was another raw dish and I must say I really enjoyed this one too. A very generous portion had been provided and the mix of avocado and tomato provided a nice creamy sauce to the dish. I honestly couldn’t make out what the ‘parmesan’ was made from.

The Raw Kitchen offers a more alternative way of of eating and might not be for everyone, but the best thing about this place is that we left feeling full, healthy and guilt-free. The menu had a lot of variety with small and large sharing plates, dessert plus several drink options – smoothies, cold pressed juices, kombucha and other hot drinks. There was also a display cabinet filled with raw cakes and protein balls.

Service was warm, welcoming and attentive from the minute we walked inside. It was a little loud inside but not loud enough that we couldn’t hear each other.

The Raw Kitchen is located at 181a High Street in Fremantle. Open Monday to Wednesday for lunch, and Thursday to Sunday for both lunch and dinner.

I have been working my way down the Urban List and decided to take my friend for her birthday lunch as neither of us had been and we are now living in Freo. We went on a Monday. Setting was great staff were friendly but the food or salad I had was dreadful. I actually felt nauseated after eating it. It didn’t taste fresh. The drink was fine. My friend didn’t enjoy her pizza either. I eat at Ooting and Lincoln and Juicy Beetroot and have never come across this at their shops.
When I mentioned it to other neighbours they advised oh didn’t you know it’s not necessarily made fresh each day there.
    Big disappointment.
