I head back to Perth every year to see my family and always check out Instagram for the latest in food and restaurants. As I love all things matcha, I came across Little Matcha Girl, a small French-Japanese patisserie in Como. A friend, J and I headed there for a shared slice of cake and some matcha lattes after breakfast one morning. The cafe’s fit out is minimalist with white or neutral tones giving off an ambiance of purity. There were hints of Japan throughout the shop from the sakura flowers to the paper cranes hanging from the ceiling.

There were lots of cakes in the cake fridge. If there had been more time and stomach space, I would have ordered an assortment of cakes but I could only fit one in and was more interested in matcha flavours.

Luckily there was one last matcha opera cake ($10.50) left in the fridge which I ordered and paid for at the counter, as well as two matcha lattes, before they was brought out to the communal table. Made from green tea buttercream, green tea almond sponge and dark chocolate ganache, this opera cake was pure heaven. Soft, moist, smooth with the matcha perfectly balanced in the buttercream. I loved the even layers of cream and sponge. That dark chocolate ganache was just divine. Absolutely no complaints and I’m so glad I was able to nab the last one.

It wasn’t long before our matcha lattes ($5 each) arrived. Again, the matcha was just perfection – not too bitter and not too sweet, allowing the natural matcha flavour to come through. I wish someone in Canberra could serve matcha like this.

Other matcha drinks on the menu include a hojicha (roasted tea) latte which I later purchased and took it to go, iced matcha drinks, cold brew matcha, and matcha whisked tea. Little Matcha Girl also have an all day food menu which looks and sounds fantastic. The people next to us were having breakfast and we overheard the guy telling our waitress that his meal was like crack. Must go back for more food!
