One sunny Saturday morning, J and I went for a drive out to Braidwood and stopped in at DOJO Bread, a local favourite bakery tucked away from the main street. Just past the Braidwood Bakery and behind Eureka Pizzeria, you’ll find a small cottage where DOJO Bread is located. The bakery is tiny and could only fit about 5 people standing inside before you had to queue out the door.
On the back shelf, there’s a variety of freshly baked bread from $4.50 for bread sticks to $7.50 for a loaf. One of the loaves that caught my eye was the beer bread cob, so we purchased one of those to take back with us.
Savoury items include hot pies, sausage rolls and focaccias that look like mini pizzas, as well as cold dips. Sweet items include salted caramel slice, lemon tarts, brownies and more. We had skipped breakfast to treat ourselves at the bakery, so we both ordered savoury items as well as coffees.
The pies looked extra tall and I was intrigued by the ratatouille pie ($7.20). The house made vegetable stew was light and filled with plenty of vegetables. I found the pastry was quite thick but then again, it was holding a lot of filling.
The beef and red wine pie ($7.20) was stuffed to the brim with super tender beef in a delicious gravy. It was good quality beef with no fatty gristly bits. One bite of this and I had major food envy.
The pork and veal sausage roll ($6.50) was quite greasy but we did like the pork, veal and herbs combination. J is an expert in the pain au chocolat field. He didn’t like DOJO’s version ($4.50) as it didn’t have enough croissant-like layers in the pastry. I did like that it was filled with a good portion of soft dark chocolate.
Although we both wouldn’t go back for the coffee, the baked goods were tasty. By the steady flow of customers walking through those doors, the locals love this place too. A hidden gem. Worth checking out if you’re passing through Braidwood!
