I have walked past Cornerstone Cafe in Weston Creek numerous times and finally organised a group lunch one weekend. The first thing to catch my eye were the hipster looking timber spools reused as tables, and timber high tables outside. The menu stuck to the window for passerby’s showed inexpensive prices which was another reason I really wanted to try this place out. There is a designated shaded outdoor area as well as tables in the sun, with some tables inside. There is a display of cakes, macarons and pastries at the front counter but with no prices shown. The chocolate chip muffins looked gigantic and I really wanted to get one but was too full after lunch.

A luxurious antique looking red velvet French sofa sits on one end of the cafe, which kind of looks out of place, but is just so pretty to look at.

Tap water and menus were provided soon after sitting down and we were asked about coffee orders. It was a hot day so I ordered an iced coffee ($6) along with another friend. Very strong coffee with ice cubes, ample amount of ice cream and whipped cream on top. Though a little strong for me, I finished this rather quickly but wished there was more ice cream in it.

I was in the mood for the chicken burger ($15.95) with salad, bacon, avocado, tomato, cheese and peri peri mayonnaise, which came served with a side of chips. I loved the grilled chicken breast and thought all the ingredients in the burger worked fabulously together. The bread roll was a little bit crusty on the outside but soft on the inside. I would have liked a less fatty bacon rasher but all in all, I enjoyed my burger. The chips were also yummy, perfectly crunchy outside but fluffy inside.

My friend ordered the fish and chips ($15.95) served with tartare sauce and a side salad. The fish only came in two small pieces but that batter looked nice and crispy.

Another friend ordered the chicken, mango and avocado salad ($16.95) which came with a grilled chicken breast and fresh mango cheeks. He really enjoyed this dish and I got a bit of food envy looking at all that fresh mango in the salad.

Cornerstone offers an all day menu on weekends so my other friend ordered the Big Breakfast ($19.95) with bacon, sausages, free range eggs, hash browns, tomato, mushrooms and sourdough toast. He was asked how he wanted his eggs cooked and he chose fried eggs.

Smoothies ($6) of berries and mango were ordered a little later. We noticed that the flavours of smoothies and milkshakes were not listed on the menu but staff were able to tell us when asked.

Service is a little slow and could be better. I liked the fact that orders were repeated and that we were advised there would be a wait time on the berry smoothie as they had run out of berries and needed to dash out to get more. However, some minor issues –  the table that had been booked hadn’t been set up but luckily there were other set tables to choose from, plates and cups weren’t being cleared away fast before the next items were brought out (making it very squishy), and a very blasé attitude when we asked for the bill a second time. Noise levels are medium-high inside due to the semi-open kitchen, especially when the blender is turned on, but we didn’t find it to be that big of an issue. I couldn’t see any gluten free dishes marked on the menu, but gluten free is available so I’m assuming some dishes can also be made gluten free. Overall, my friends and I enjoyed our meals at Cornerstone and would go back. I would love to try the pancakes (at only $13.95) next time.

Cornerstone is good value for money with a decent menu on offer. It is open seven days for breakfast and lunch. Dinner is available on Thursday and Friday nights, with items like an antipasti board, sliders and pizza on the menu.
