After my first visit to Black Fire for lunch last weekend, a group of friends and I went back to try out the breakfast menu. It’s been updated slightly since last weekend so here’s another shot of the breakfast menu below. Our lovely waitress also mentioned the breakfast special of the day, an intriguing snapper fillet dish with eggs and peppers.

I started off with my soy mocha ($3.50) and was impressed with how good it tasted. It’s rare for me to find that perfect balance of chocolate and coffee. I really wanted to order a second one but restrained myself.

I ordered the wood fired baked eggs with carved ham, wood roasted mushrooms and manchego gratin ($17). The two eggs come poached (one oozed out when broken while the other had dried up a bit). There was an assortment of large juicy mushrooms bursting with natural flavour. There were plenty of strips of lean ham providing a salty protein hit. I loved the generous amount of manchego that had melted in the pan topped with oregano. Mmm cheese and oregano, a great combination. A large slice of thickly cut bread on the side helps mop up all the juices in the pan. Really satisfied and happy with my dish.

Both gluten intolerant friends ordered the gluten-free version of Black Fire’s big brekky, the Black Fire morning ($19) with grilled morcilla and smoked bacon, two poached eggs, spinach, mushrooms, potatoes and avocado. It even came with gluten-free toast (no extra charge). Both were very happy and full with the meal. The menu states there is asparagus in this meal rather than spinach but perhaps the gluten-free version provides spinach as the substitute.

V got the ‘Huevo Rotto’ ($19) of poached eggs, grilled chorizo, white beans and crispy potato with thick slices of toast. ‘Huevo Rotto’ is Spanish for broken eggs and the dish is meant to be served with the runny eggs mixed through everything. When the dish was placed in front of V, our friendly waiter broke the poached eggs letting all that yolk spill out.

Another friend ordered the poached eggs with hollandaise on toasted sourdough with ocean trout, spinach and avocado tartare ($18). He was happy with this more substantial version of eggs benedict.

Overall, we all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. There was lots of flavour and the portions are a decent size. The breakfast menu offers plenty of options for everyone including gluten-free and vegetarian dishes. I think I will need to go back for the house-made pancakes. The vibe is relaxed so you can enjoy the food and a catch up with friends without feeling rushed. Again, great service, both staff were knowledgable and passionate about the food being served and were careful in giving us space whilst topping up our water regularly and clearing plates promptly. I understand that a few tables will be placed out the front in the warmer months (soon!)

I’ll definitely be back for more breakfast. Have you been yet?
