I’m in Perth for two weeks and took the family out for brunch at Typika Artisan Roasters in Claremont. The first thing my sister and I noticed on the menu was the ‘deconstructed hot chocolate’. I asked our waiter what this was and he mentioned it’s a glass of warm milk, with a small glass of chocolate sauce, chocolate flakes and marshmallows on the side. I had to try it! The coffee menu doesn’t specify how much individual drinks are and only states prices are between $3.50-$6 which was a little annoying. So I’m assuming this was $6. The deconstructed hot chocolate came out on a thin wooden platter and has everything the waiter mentioned. I poured the entire contents of the chocolate sauce into the milk and only half the chocolate flakes – this was very chocolately! I let my other family members eat the marshmallows as it was pretty sweet, even for me.

There is a lot of space inside the cafe with a mix of large square high tables, long wooden benches and booths. It has a clean modern industrial look to it. There are three shiny and polished coffee roasting machines behind glass doors for staff access only.

I love how cafes are now bringing greenery inside.

I liked the sound of the smoked cod and leek baked eggs ($18.50) and ordered that, however, 5 minutes later our waiter came back as they had run out of cod. I asked for smoked salmon as a substitution instead. This came out still steaming so I had to wait a few minutes for it to cool down while everyone else dug in to their meals. I thought this was a really tasty dish and I love the sweetness the leeks provide. The smoked salmon was a good substitution. The eggs were a bit too cooked for my liking, I would’ve preferred them runnier to dip my bread into. Apart from that, I very much enjoyed this meal.

Typika offers a varied menu and there were a few things I would’ve liked to try. It gets quite loud inside even though the place was only 3/4 full. That and the very large square tables meant I had to shout a bit to talk to people on the other side of the table. Service is passable – wait staff aren’t that friendly and always in a rush (even though the place wasn’t packed out that weekday morning). We had other commitments so didn’t want to wait around for the bill to be provided at the table. Instead, I went up to the pay station counter. I was informed of the total bill but not provided a receipt with a breakdown of items. The total sounded about right and since we were in a hurry I just paid it, but I was a little irked that a bill wasn’t shown. I know I should have just asked to see the bill.

Overall, Typika is a funky open cafe, service is pretty quick and there’s a good selection of brunch items to suit most people.
