Tuesdays is half-price mussel night at the Belgian Beer Cafe in Kingston. A whole kilo of mussels with Belgian frites and mayo (usually $30-32) for less than $16.

The cafe is fitted out with dark chocolate wooden panels against the walls, and wooden tables and benches. It has a really laidback vibe with people enjoying the extensive range of artisan beers on offer. If you get a chance to grab a table outside on a sunny day, do it. It’s lovely!

Orders are usually taken at the bar but as there was a big group of us, the barman told us a waiter would take the group’s order. The mussels menu has grown since the last time I was here where I had the Thai curry mussels. Curry mussels definitely work and after that success, I chose the new Indian Goan Curry mussels.

It took about half an hour to come out as by that stage, the whole place was full. Empty buckets are also provided to place empty shells. I was super happy with my choice. When the lid was taken off, the smell of beautiful curry wafted down the table. It smelled amazing. The curry is mixed with chopped up celery, onion and spring onion.

The mussels were nice but it was the curry sauce that made them great. A light coconut cream with a bit of kick to it. I could see there was actually a lot of curry sauce at the bottom of the pot. Luckily a friend had also ordered garlic bread and I was able to dip some into the sauce to soak up as much curry as I could. I was even dropping my chips in to soak it up. It was so good.

I managed to get a shot of the chilli mussels which weren’t spicy at all.

The side of chips the mussels come with were pretty good too – crunchy on the outside with creamy soft potato inside. My drinking friends say beers here are pricier than at most places, but there is a wider selection of Belgian beers.

For $16, I was really happy with this meal. Both the curry mussels I’ve had here were fantastic. Apart from mussels, the Belgian also do various appetisers, steaks and pastas. Bookings are essential.
