One of my work Christmas party’s was held at Delissio restaurant and bar in Curtin.  I’d been here on a few occasions previously (my partner adores their spicy fetta stuffed fried olives) and thought it was a relatively nice restaurant. A previous year’s Christmas party was also held there and a banquet was chosen as the easiest option (where everyone shares the dishes offered), however I did not think much of it.

So I was happy that everyone preferred to order off the a la carte menu. Some bread with olive oil and balsamic ($12) was ordered to start us off. Quite pricey for two slices of bread and not very easy to share.

For the main, I chose the paella of saffron based rice, chicken, chorizo, fish and mussels ($32). This looked bright and colourful as it was placed in front of me. There was no chorizo so perhaps they ran out of it. Not the best paella I’ve had especially compared to some Spanish restaurants. It didn’t have the flavours absorbed into the rice and seemed as if it was clumsily and quickly put together.

For dessert, I chose the apple bignet with baked cinnamon apple, pistachios, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce ($13).  A bignet is a small round pastry, almost donut-like, and can range in various sizes.  The bignets at Delissio are very small but freshly made and dusted in cinnamon sugar.  The baked apple was delicious and added a nice touch to the dish. The chocolate sauce was served in a mini-jug and I poured all the chocolate on top of everything. The idea of the dish was more appealing than it tasted. I think larger and more bignets with a nicer gelato could have greatly improved the dessert. There is some discrepancy between sizing especially comparing the size of this dessert to the tiramisu which was huge and cheaper. I just felt like I didn’t get bang for my buck.

Delissio is hit and miss for me. However, it was a pleasant lunch with Christmas bon bons, silly jokes, toys and much merriment was had.

Wishing everyone out there a Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa and Happy holidays! Hope you all indulge a little, catch up with family and enjoy the festivities.
