Box Diner in Fyshwick is located on the outskirts of Fyshwick on Tennant Street, among some business centres.

The place is easy to find and there is lots of parking available on the side of the road. The cafe is on the ground floor on the corner of a large building. With the sun shining on the cafe, and the bright orange decor, it looks like a lovely little cafe. I like how they’ve made the most of the space they have. The indoor part is long and narrow with a few tables and chairs and 2 booths at the back. Outdoors they’ve put out a lot of tables and chairs along the little verandah to fit more people in. There are a few more tables and chairs out on the grass closer to the road. Should be a nice spot when we stop having these cold mornings.

There is plenty to choose from up on the blackboard for both breakfast and lunch. I ordered the chocolate and hazelnut crepe ($12.50) and a soy mocha ($3.50 + 50c soy milk) at the counter.

The daily specials are cheap. 2 for 1 coffees are a bargain to avoid Mondayitis.

My mocha had some melted chocolate on the bottom which I mixed through. The coffee was smooth and I was really happy with it. Just the right mix of coffee and chocolate.

The 3 folded crepes came out dusted in sugar. They put a bit of effort in presentation, but the crepes didn’t taste great. There was a minimal amount of chocolate and I found the crepes were dry.

Unwrapping one of the crepes, you can see there is hardly any chocolate and I found the ends were very dry and hard. Obviously not a freshly made crepe (the menu doesn’t state it’s freshly made either), so it may be something from the frozen section that’s been warmed up/microwaved, hence the dry ends. I think there is much room for improvement – a few tablespoons of heated up nutella and a side of cream would do the trick. The chopped up hazelnuts were a nice touch but this was not worth $12.50.

I saw many tradies and office workers in the cafe, either getting take away or sitting down to read the paper with breakfast. Many of the bacon and egg rolls were ordered by nearby tables, and at only $7 for a large bun stuffed with bacon and egg, that must be the favourite breakfast item. The lunch menu doesn’t look bad – various burgers, pastas and salads which sound okay.

Happy with the coffee but I wouldn’t recommend the crepes. Box Diner is open Monday to Friday.
